Really? Doesn't seem like it!

Is there something that drastically affects sneak? Sometimes it kicks off on the first try, but the above happens frequently enough, I figured I better ask.

You no longer feel stealthy.

You were initially sneaking. When you try to sneak again, it cancels the first sneak, giving you the "You no longer feel stealthy message." This does not relate to the current sneak attempt.

The first sneak attempt failed. Thus, no "You no longer feel stealthy" message on the renewed attempt. Had you attempted to sneak again, assuming the second attempt was successfull in the above portion of the log, you would see "You no longer feel stealthy."

Looks to me like you only failed one try. So:

"Really? Doesn't seem like it!"

Yes. And yes it does.

Sorry, but now I am confused.

I thought this was indicative of failing the sneak attempt... no?

And this meant it was successful.

The first attempts were initiated immediately after logging in. I didn't realize sneak stayed active from one session to the next. Does it?

If I was already successfully sneaking, and the bazillion retries were all successful, and I was cancelling the pre-existing sneak, the messages are really misleading, and should be reversed.

They should be, yes. You don't get to know for sure when you're sneaking, just like you don't get to know for sure when you're hiding.

Got it - thanks.

I always assumed those messages were indicative of the success or failure. My mistake.

I can easily understand how you made this mistake, and I'm actually surprised that I got it myself, but still--that's fuggin' priceless.

Actually the problem is that mastered does not indicate 100% success rate with skills. The skill rankings used to read as "perfect", and were changed to "mastered" for this reason.

With both sneaking and hiding you won't really know whether it worked or not. Used well in conjunction, you can tell you aren't sneaking if moving moves you out of hide... unless the hide failed.

Sneak lasts for a certain number of ticks. So if you log out it saves. Just like spells, even though you release all your spells at log out, they are still active if self targeted spells.

A good way to start the session is with a simple visible command. Takes you out of sneak and you can redo your timer. Camo works just like that in that there are few ways to know if you are camo'd. Hide however does not work like camo in that anything you do with the exception of some looks causes you to break hide. Hiding while sneaking is a good way to know when you fail sneak. Meh, usually at superg or better you won't be noticed.

You can do a few things while hidden without breaking hide, and can use a technique to check for hidden status with hide and camo both.
