Whatever you do, get out of Ayamao. Try to start in Uxmal (neutral and lawless -- hectic but fun), Krychire / Northern Wastes (necro-friendly), or the Empire of the Bright Star (evil place, not VERY necro friendly but they probably will leave you alone).
Also, you learn skills and spells from NPCs. They generally tend to be clearly marked as some form of teacher, or at least a particularly powerful sort of NPC (guards, wandering spellcasters, stuff like that). Also, places like libraries and barracks tend to have people that can train you. Just type 'prac' or 'train' while around a NPC, and if you can learn anything from it, it'll show a list of what it can teach you.
