Yes. You get the tame skill relatively early, but it will only stop attacks by aggressive animals until Veteran status. Even then, the quality of pets you're able to "tame" is dependent on your level.

There are animals you can get before veteran, things were changed a while back.

There are a couple animals out there you can tame at jman.

That's very good to know, but still. If she's a novice and thinks she's actually getting a pet out of the tame skill, I thought it best to give her a heads up.

Also, order a tamed pet to remove all, drop all. Sometimes they have gold or equipment in their inventory or even worn.
