From what I've seen, only the magical folk who can use a particularly useful spell/prayer or a similar scroll or wand are able to discern any enhancements on a piece. Nonsense. Clearly they are visible runes which the uninitiated simply can't decipher, and because these runes are of such a personal nature to the maker, a spell is required to discern what type of enchantment is for.
