Once upon a time, I wouldn't have done this, but seeing as it's been a few years since I have played seriously and only kept in touch enough to be barely aware of changes, I think I could use the help. Especially since the forum populace seems helpful in regards to this, at least, on a fundamental level.

I realize there are two types of shamans, the more caster oriented and the more tank oriented, but beyond that..I'm not really sure how to figure out the build. It seems to me like art is a must-have regardless, as is int/wis..and then con..dex..and everything but Charisma :(

Well again from another post the build could also depend on certain cabals/tribunals you wish to join. I was tank on Domko but I could do some serious damage with voodoo based on my equip. He was a centaur and I hardly spent any points on art. You want more mana if you want to be a cannon.

But depending on the race you can max out your int/wis pretty easy and I found Constitution to not be so important because of race and shields. I could go quite a few rounds with a barb using 1h weapons.

There's my two cents, may not be the best of info, but I thought Domko was good at tanking with good dps with spirit horde.

I always viewed them as having three possible builds. Tank, malediction, and voodoo. For a tank you obviously want to aim for your physical stats so you can wield that awesome axe and take the hits without being as concerned. For malediction you want to work on your int, wis, art, and then go from there depending on whether you want your remaining points to go into the physical or mental. Voodoo you want to go int, wis, some art in case your kill fails, but unless you're a gnome mana is a must.

That said I haven't played one in awhile so things may have changed.

As a tank shaman, I maxed CON/INT/DEX/STR, left WIS well short, trained 2 art and 3 HP and am using all my mentor points henceforth for HP.

I still don't find an issue using my spells when needed.

The two shaman builds are voodoo cannon and useful shaman.

Personally I think art is a waste of time. Those that are going to get raped by your spells are going to get raped by them 95% of the time and those that are going to bother with enchanting are going to be virtually immune to your spells.

I still think that the class has huge versatility though.

Shamans have a huge benefit with being able to brew their own healing spells and have a large hp pool. Stat balancing seems to help pretty well with shamans depending on what you want out of them. If you want to use them as a healer/malediction/voodoo cannon, more int/wis/mana/art and possibly con. You could balance and probably naturally max out your str/dex/con/int/wis and maybe 3 points into art to land against most melee. Tank would definitely be str/dex/con/int, wis to maybe 16 points for brewing to be tolerable and the rest hp. Anyway you set it up, so long as you develop some tactics and preparation, you can beast pretty well solo up to and including GM - See Ishiye.

Dralan Quickmag. Welcome back. I made a gnome shaman named Fizbickle. had him for close to a year if I remember right. And he never ever voodooed anyone, but he was all set up to do it. Max wis max mana trains.

Shamans own. Hard.

Max int/wis. Get your con/dex to 16+. Dump 5~ art. If you're going Tribunal max CHA. I recommend this, just so you can level easier. Strength is a pointless stat. You just need enough to carry your armor once you GM(and once you GM you can hold a spirit doll with great strength and your shield, axe is pointless). So just mod it to max while leveling.

Mana trains if you have anything left. And not for voodoo, just for the regen boost.

God, don't max your cha on a shaman unless you're doing hammer and even then it's questionable.
