I'm sure there's a flag delimiting mentors already. S'how the system seems to work. Surely the who command could be persuaded to allow "who mentor" for levels jman and lower, thereby allowing the newbie to pick and choose among his mentors; "That one sounds evil... that one's from a faraway land... that one sounds good!" Perhaps it could also show race and class, too, as long as its understood that such information is OOC.

who (under JMAN)
[--- ---] Bob the guy.
[--- ---] [MENTOR] Jim the other guy

who (over JMAN)
[--- ---] Bob the guy.
[--- ---] Jim the other guy.

who mentor (under JMAN)
[Elf Pri] Jim the other guy

who mentor (over JMAN)
You feel that you should exercise a little more independence than that.

Whatever flags there are currently for the MENTOR command are invisible to the user. Your suggestion, however, to simply modify the WHO command, sounds much easier to implement and would produce the same desired effect.

Does the mentor command currently go out to just one mentor, or does it go to several? I have had a few occasions that I received the mentor notification, then by the time I contacted the newbie (which is always either within seconds or at the end of a fight if I receive it mid-combat), the newbie responds having already met with a mentor. I don't know if these are exprienced players who used the mentor command then bumped into somone, or used the mentor command then contacted an IC/OOC friend, or if their mentor request goes out to several people?

Also, when a new character creates, does it send out the notification of their enrolling in training to all possible mentors? Whenever I receive the notice from the training grounds instructor that "XXXX has enrolled in training", I was trying to always send them a tell to contact me if they need any help, but I don't want to do that if the n00bie/lowbie is getting flooded by 10 people at the same time.

The hours you listed are when the MUD is at about 1/2 of it's higher count. Most people are at work or at school. That's pretty bad luck, though. You might have joined one of the less populated kingdoms as well.

I started in Taslamar, and have hung around in several of the others. Matter of fact, I think Krychire is the only city I haven't been to looking for people.

It's currently 4 pm as I'm writing this, and 28 people (inc. me) are online, and I've only run into one person. Is there a gathering place I should be going to rather than the inns?

Edit-
I just found this thread. Is this really the problem???

You've tried the Nerina Inn? The Nerina and Teron Inns are by far the most populated, and I almost always see 1 person in there at least. If there's no one in there, try waiting a few minutes.

Perhaps allowing a person to add themselves to the mentor listing for other coutries. So like I could be a zhensh paladin and add myself to ayamao and Taslamar's things so any newbies there would contact me if there was none of the current kingdom on.

Showing mentor in the who list i like. It will let them know who is a mentor and let those who are totally clueless realize there is some sort of mentor system implemented.

I like the fact of being able to call upon a mentor from a different country. A visiting mentor might be the closest one at hand to where you are, while your own country's mentors could be far, far away or too busy to help you at the time you needed them.

Also, it would be nice if once you used the mentor command, the mentor would respond that they got your call and were on their way to you. That way, you know you aren't waiting in vain, and if something comes up, say someone else that you already know wanders in, you can tell the mentor that's coming that you've already been helped, so they aren't searching around for you.

Basic politeness all the way around.

Becoming a mentor for a remote kingdom might be cool. It might even be done semi-ICly via a NPC, perhaps at each Inn. The NPC would check that you've mastered the language and are of an appropriate aura for the city (or grey), and of course the appropriate status.

It has the potential to go to several, but the reality is that there is usually only one or two people who qualify.
