I've used a basic rule of thumb (which is inaccurate but helps in guesstimations) that for every gold coin it costs, it's another level.

There is a poin to be made here. I've found that the amount of coin in relation to certain things does in fact indicate level somewhat.

For example, when identifying items, the amount of gold an item is 'worth' (not counting enchantments) is the rough level of the item (IE items that cost 410 silver should be viewed as 'level 41' or low [master])

[edit = my bad...screwed up the level titles]

That's a guideline, but not a rule.

is it four levels to a title? otherwise I have lost track on how many/few levels I've got under my belt by now...

"some" seems a bit unspecific...

Five (mostly):

1-5 = Amateur
6-10 = Novice
11-15 = Initiate
16-20 = Apprentice
21-25 = Journeyman
26-30 = Veteran
31-35 = Expert
36-40 = Mentor
41-45 = Master
46-49 = Champion
50 = Grand Master

Peace,
Bux

Also, you accrue attribute points on even levels, so that can help you figure out your level, if you've lost count by +/- 1.

Dalamar has already touched on this, but as a general guide, if you aren't sure what you can keep, have them identified and find out its quality.

near-godlike = 46+
outstanding = 41+
superior = 36+
above average = 31+

And if you lose count of what level character is at, goto a healer. The cost indicated for cure poison per gold and platinum is equivalent to level.

Of course the reason why numbers were removed in the first place was to avoid players finding out, but since Bux (who's been an imm) is sharing.....
