From my experience, there is a cap above GM. Until you hit that cap, you can gain xp through quests and/or spells. It is around 1/3. After that, the only way you can gain xp (as in visible ticks), is through rewards.

Mmm. Interesting. Maybe I should stop giving into breath of life and raise dead and test this out.

There is enough room to gain exp from the normal ways to receive raise dead or breath of life without losing the level.

So, basically-- I can still get XP at the Temple then? I mean, it's of little importance to me, if I DO need to use that place for training, it'll grant massive xp anyway, the 'familiar' won't affect too much. I was just curious because I usually take people, and that new "your group member is a newb and hasn't seen this place yet" helps other people who have already been training for a while.

Hrm, so we, as GM, can get buffer XP for when we perform the death quest/get raised right? So if I got raised and I had enough buffer xp to go from 'newly found' to 'familiar' at the Temple, I shouldn't be dropping what seems like a tick of xp, should I? This is all so very confusing... help? Anyone?

Raise dead/Breath of Life/DeathQuest will ALWAYS take some XP.

The buffer XP is so that when you do get a raise dead you don't lose your GM level. Your still GM, but just with less XP buffered up.

Hm, I guess I just thought the buffer Xp would be sufficient to be more or less more than a 'tick's worth of XP, so that if I did get raised, it wouldn't show a 'drop' in XP.

Raise dead/Breath of life I think always take 1 tick no matter your level...I could be mistaken.

Death Quest takes a number of ticks based on how many times you've already DQ'd the first one is free, after that it'll take one...two, then I think it maxes at three ticks.

The XP you can gain after GM from hitting NPCs/casting is just under 1/3, like Lolth said.
