As a recommendation for a class with the most versatile and greatest survival skillset, it has to be the shaman. They wear light armor, get a shield, and their protective and healing spells keep themselves very self-sufficient. Please try one!

Also definatly giving this a try!

If leveling is unimportant to you you shouldn't have too much trouble keeping your character alive, but I die 3-4 times each time I level a char to GM (level 50).

If you want to RP, you should find an inn, it's where people go to hang out and talk. You'll know them because when you rest there you'll get a message about recouperating every tick. To get to Exile's inn, for example, you would enter the city from its west gate and go the following way:

op e;7e;op ne;ne;op e;e

From Nerina's north gate, it's something along the lines of 3s;2w, and from Teron's west gate I believe it's 17e;op nw;nw;op w;w. Sith'a'niel is (from the entrance) e;sa yes;e;u;3w;u;e;s;sw. There are generally people in one or more of those inns.

Yeah, I gave away a bit of IC info. It's pretty newberiffic though and it helps the game, so don't cry to me.

If you want a player group to join at a relatively low level you could always try joining a religion. They are usually willing to accept people of any level, assuming you RP well enough to get in. Just check HELP PANTHEON and read the help files for each god, find one that you think you'd like, and check the WHO list for titles that sound like they belong to that god.

You can't join a religion if you're a shaman, though that shouldn't keep you from trying that class.

It's also allowed to join a cabal or a tribunal at any level, although many leaders believe that it's more "friendly" to keep you out at the early stage because they don't want you attracting their enemies that soon in your character's life. It's a valid point, I guess, especially for newbies like yourself who might become discouraged from being repeatedly killed.

But if you are determined, it's certainly possible to get in early. You will just need to have a very thick-skin about death.

As others have stated in this thread: when you die find a priestly title on the who list and send them a tell (make sure to include your name because if they aren't holding spirit sight, they won't know who you are). This takes care of two of your problems. You'll get life and you'll start some RP. Don't worry if you're not sure if the person you're contacting is a priest. Ask, and if they aren't they'll most likely point you in the direction of a priest. Making friends with a priest is a great way to see a lot of RP. Priests are constantly being pestered from everyone for something. If you're bored, follow one around if they'll let you for a while. You'll get to meet some people and see some rezzes. Always fun.

And though you can join a tribunal or cabal as early as your RP allows, I would definately wait until you're ready to stick with a character for a few months. You can only have one character in a tribunal or cabal at a time. However, you can join a religion right away. It's a great way to meet some characters and gives you a sort of built in RP (of course if you're becoming a shaman this option is out the window). To join a religion, look for a character with a religious themed title (ie High Priest of Death, Sceptre of Order, Advocate of Justice, Protector of Love.. ect.).

Welcome to the game! I hope you find a character to stick with. Things definitely get much more fun once you start RPing and getting into the plot of things.

I've found one I'm sticking with, while he's no shaman... :P

Using tell is to ask people for resurrections is allowed then, people are fine with being approached through tell..? To me, it seems like a personal method of communication, as if you should at the least know someone before using a link like that. But hey, I'm all for asking for help!

People at SoI have been trying to steal me back, but I'm now addicted to SK, lets hope it lasts!

Tells are the main way people communicate in SK. Since the realms are sooo vast it's the best way to start some RP or get a hold of someone. And priests expect people they've never met to send them a tell asking for help. I play a priest currently and it's the reason I rolled her. I love a built in reason to RP with people I have yet to meet. :D So if you see someone with an interesting title, feel free to send them a tell and see what its all about. No guarantee that they'll respond in a friendly way, of course, but that's the way RP goes.

Good luck out there!

For a while when I played my barbarian, I wouldn't send tells to people I didn't know. It was very irritating for the people around me when I asked them for help, but I felt it sort of showed how low his INT was. Eventually I had to break the habit in order to survive, but I always put in a description of his distant and fading voice between two *'s to show just how hard it was for him to communicate like that. Some people got into that, but most people just sort of ignored it. So, in the end it's up to you, but not using tells will make life more difficult for you.

Protip: If you send a tell asking for a resurrection, be sure to include your name. If the priest does not have spirit sight running, they will not be able to see the name of the ghost sending them a tell, and if they are currently engaged in other conversations, they may not be able to reply.
