Dang it. I knew there was a reason I was agreeing with you.

first, easy one--does anyone know a reasonably good estimation of an in-game regen ticks in seconds? I spend a lot of time sleeping and would like to set a tick-timer to check score approximately once a tick while doing so.

As said before ticks are roughly a minute although I would not recommend setting a trigger to automatically check score only because that can get you in trouble.

He's right. Time spent on the game is supposed to be present and active enough to respond in a few moments. I know its not always possible to be present every moment. If you aren't thats why the void exists. Eventually you will be disconnected for inactivity. That is good because you actually aren't playing. If you start playing again before void or disconnect, there's no problem. There are several reasons for this. There's no reason to take up a connection and associated game resources if you don't intend to play. There's also various parts of the game which track hours spent. Using such a timer to inflate these hours, be it for jail, leadership, or to avoid the time bandits, is against the rules, specifically the rule about botting.

I'm not really talking about botting-but when I'm leveling, I'll sleep and alt-tab to say this window, and a timer I only turn on while asleep so I see regen ticks go by seems useful/not against the spirit of the game, it's not like I'm not keeping half an eye on the screen anyways? After hearing the outcry against it I'm not going to use one until I get word back, so please let me know if that sounds like botting to you or not :P

That is not botting because you would be at the keyboard the whole time. So you are good there.

As far as a timer, the best advice I can give you and get a stop watch and time the amount of time it takes to regen your mana and then you know how much time you have to spend in other windows.

Also a side note: Skills like trance and mediation are key in regen of mana.

Yeah, I die a little inside every tick that meditation doesn't go work :P

I am not sure that I know what you are talking about.

Mediation is an automatic skill and should be working all the time.

Even with meditation and trance mastered, resting or sleeping, the amount of regen varies. There are sometimes where I get a huge jump and there are other times where I feel I could sit on my head upside down and get more energy back.

The quote above is the key part, but Achernar's whole post is a good explanation of our reasons against botting.

I'm assuming you mean you'll alt-tab to your web browser; if you're alt-tabbing back to the MUD client, then just hit Enter afterwards. There is no immortal discretion with botting - if you are caught with the automatic script, like what you've described, your character will be deleted. Botting is very unfair to other players who play the game properly and is not tolerated. No surprise then why everyone advises newbies to avoid any script that automates your character and/or prevents voiding out due to inactivity.

Automating your character is the key concept we're talking about. If you're not controlling your character personally (i.e. you're not typing the commands "at the keyboard"), then you're running the gauntlet. Let's not get into a legal loophole discussion - don't automate at all and there'll be no deletions due to botting. Everyone's happy.

I absolutely agree with this, given the calculation described could even be done in a script: the key difference here is a reminder popup or local echo on your mud client letting you know that a tick has probably passed. If nothing is sent to the MUD by your script, it's not a bot. Please re-read this paragraph to ensure you understand the difference between bots that automate your character on the MUD and a script that only affects your MUD client locally.
