A few other hints:

You mentioned restarting when dieing. Reincarnation only costs a level, which for newbie characters only takes a few minutes to restore. Look for a priest first, of course - that's a chance not only for roleplay, but to make an ally. Either way, go back to your corpse to get your stuff.

Don't let your bad experience with a mentor dissuade you from them all. A good mentor will see that you learn how to navigate, not just drag you from place to place. If you get lost, though, you can "recall" from most areas.

My official free 30 day trial for ZMUD is up, so I decided to download Putty and try that instead. I was able to enter my character name, and then garbage popped up when I tried to enter my password.

Therefore, who is using Putty, and what settings do you have to change from the defaults to make it work for a Windows 2000 OS?

Turn off SSH in PuTTY. It's probably doing some wacky encryption thing.

edit:

I should mention, that to turn of SSH, you need to change the settings for your saved SK session. It should be on the main preference window thing for that session.

I'm still having problems. There are hundreds of potential Setting changes I could make, but I don't want to make matters worse than they already are. Putty is not recognizing <;> as a command delimiter. Also, it won't accept any new commands while I am in the middle of a battle.

Can someone who is using PUTTY send me their session settings?

Double click putty.
type mud.vividnet.com on host name
type 1996 on port.
check telnet protocol
connect.

It's that simple really.. You dont have to mess with any other options.

I would recomend downloading SimpleMu which is an excellent client for mudding. It's free and the only drawback is you dont have spellcheck if you dont register it. Do a google search it will popup first.

On connection type, SK needs Mud (All Types).

It's prolly some trash in the string you send, if it is through putty with which you had trouble....

You type Babis for example it sends B;1$mpis@#% and the mud does not accept it.

Try SimpleMy for the win ;)

I logged into SK this morning with Putty but some of the commands I entered once I was logged in didn't work correctly, so I logged back off and asked for help.

I made the suggested modifications, and attempted to log back on. At that time I was told that my character name was illegal. Therefore, I am currently being blocked from logging onto SK with my own character that I created.

Would someone please tell me what's going on????

My bet, like i said before is that your putty client sends some trash alnog with the lines you type.

therefore while you actually type your name, the mud receives something else. Try SimpleMu or smthing. You obviously fiddled with some option on putty that does something to what u send. Propably some encryption is my guess.

My advice: Buy a decent client, they are extremely cheap and for a lifetime
