Even though you may have already gotten a lot of this information, I'll repeat the stuff that was most useful to me when I started out.
Find the trainers who train weapons, and train the certain weapon type that you are using up to maximum from that trainer, which is usually around fair, for newbie areas. For example, if you're using daggers, make sure to train dagger.
Secondly, make sure that you're wearing light armor, at most. That chainmail that you were wearing at the start of this thread is actually heavy armor, I believe, and even though you can wear it, it will lower all of your combat skills, thus making it harder to hit with weapons, and the like. If you're confused as to what kind of armor a certain material is, try help armor2. (Remember that once you get invested into a religion, the type of armor you can wear will change, help armor2 also tells you this.)
It will also help to hang around the healer while resting, which in the case of the Collegium, is the west tower, and in Nerina it's right in front of the training grounds. Not only will the healer cast healing spells on you, but he'll also cast helpful spells such as bless and armor.
Ahh, and don't forget that every two levels you gain, starting at level 2, you get an extra attribute point to train. At this point, you may want to consider putting some into CON, but it's your choice. You might ask a priest player for that information.
