You get a certain amount of points for mentoring, and once you've acquired the magic amount, you're granted the point after a monthly reboot. You have to do a pretty heavy amount of mentoring to get one.

As I recall, Achernar once said that you can get those mentor points through other means as well, such as getting them equipment or helping them level. I can't remember when or where, though, so that could be my imagination. It's possible this is calculated simply through time spent with the mentoree.

I recall that too, although I thought it was Dulrik who'd said it. Basically, don't limit your helping to just teaching. Interact, show them areas...I just did a wee bit of searching and couldn't find a post to validate our memories though.

I get a stat point at least every other month. I guess I'm just nicer than you people. :P

Kidding.. but it's not that difficult.

On that note, isn't there a limit on how many mentor points you get? Surely mine will be up soon.

I try to help out new players as much as I can, but I very seldom end up teaching them skills/spells, and don't do a lot of hand-holding either (At least not in-character). I have a knack for finding newbies when they're strangely down on their luck, and end up offering some advice/assistance and sending them on their way (Typically with some OOC tells to ensure that they're on the right page)

I've also probably only gotten about 2-3 stat points since it was implemented, though. I got the feeling a while back that it was a possibility that even with a large amount of trains, it helped to "spend time" with players as well, which made me think it was somehow IMM-run. For example, if an IMM saw you assist a player he would be able to give you more "points" in that category. While I don't think it's a bad way to go about it, it rubs me the wrong way, mostly because of the fact that even though I help newbies I never get any stat points, kind of like how even though I RP pretty heavily on every character I play (even the throw-away ones) I hardly ever land any enlightenments, even when PARs are included in the RP.

I realized a long time ago to stop caring about enlights and IMM-given rewards such as mentor points, because they're very subjectively given, mostly due to human limitations.

The "time you spend" with a pupil can be measured in innovative ways not requiring a human to supervise the process.

I can think of a few methods I would use, but to speculate on it is to invite ulterior motives into the mentor equation.

I really very strongly doubt there's a human element to the mentor system, as far as oversight goes.

On my current main, I've gotten a mentor point at almost every monthly, and I can safely say with some measure of surety that it revolves mostly around trains, exploring with your student, and helping them level, not necessarily in that order of priority.

Correct, there is no human element involved in gaining mentor points. Now that monthly updates are automated, you should be getting them regularly if you are doing the right things. Previously, "monthly" updates were not always once per month. There is no limit on the number of mentor points you can gain, other than the lifespan of your character.

I'm sure you actually meant "no human oversight is or ever was involved in the handing out of mentor points".

Mentors still need to contribute to the betterment of newbies. We didn't automate that part. :) :)
