I just adjusted what was suppose to be black to a dark shade of grey. I don't think that really matters. Just change your colors, I had to. I like having a black background. It is easy on the eyes and easy to read (unless the text is black, but then I don't have text that is black anymore)

After reading this thread I made adjustments to my color scheme, and find that I like the solid black background better, and made my black text show up as dark dark gray. I do think D has said to refrain from any use of $0 as builders.

Does that mean we should typo report items/rooms/etc that have $0 color?

Feel free. Ultimately that is the builders choice. I'd say anything with one or two spots of $0 is not a problem, though if the whole description of the item is $0, then yes, do.

Now you mention it; yes, he did. I seem to recall his favoured Mud client of the day was one that couldn't map foreground colours.

Or he was too stubborn to. :P

UNIX is the grand-daddy of the internet and back then 100% of telnet screens had a black background. When I was in college, I would MUD from my machine running Linux which shares a UNIX background. Maybe you can adjust your preferred color in some Linux distributions, but it wasn't what I would call a standard feature.

Seems to me two things are being discussed here:
1) voice inflection and emotes as part of a say or tell
2) color changes within a say or tell

First off, I'm all for voice inflection being part of a say or tell, to a certain point. Example:

X says '*in a gravely voice* Good morning.'

is a lot different than

X says '*in a gravely voice as he looks disgustedly at Y* Good morning.'

Vocal tone is one thing, adding action to it is just skating around putting in an emote.

As for color changes in says and tells, If it's only one color, and the whole line is that color, or it's being used for emphasis, great. Some people (Mezcao...) should be shot for the sheer amount of crap they put in front of what they say. A simple *darkly* or *speaking in a deep voice* would get the point across, or even putting the whole line in dark gray.

In closing -
$0 should be removed from the mud entirely, to be replaced by light and dark grey.

Lets not forget this guy who feels the need to start every say with a rainbow of colors...

That is no better than adjectives that tell people you're beautiful or handsome. If your voice pierces somebody's soul it isn't for you to determine that. Keep it generic or just don't do it at all. Save us all the headache of insulting you time and time again.

What I am thinking of is not long, just one word offset with a * on each side, in a dark or light grey, followed by what my character says in magenta or normal text color depending on if it is a tell or a say. I have managed to get the gtell, reply and say to function as I would like to, but I am still having trouble getting the sayto and tell to function.

I know that most would rather not see color or vocal quality in a say at all, but some have said that it does add to things, unless you are telling people how your voice makes them fell or the thing has too much color. I am just wondering how to do this so I can add just a little more dimension to a flat-screen world.
