I'll start off with an easy one, because I know someone's going to pull off the elaborate 17 page essay on this.

Deep-elves:

Con: Iron and Bolt of Glory are the ones that come to mind first.

..along with poison and plague. The poison vulnerability is especially painful when you get hit by poisonous gas blasts.

Deep-elves are so fragile. :(

You can get a very good idea of what the racial vulnerability and immunities are by reading the helpfiles. They are certainly good things to be aware of.

I found few armor slots being a pro, because there are a lot less folks who want to pk a griffon for his eq.

The real cost of griffons having fewer slots is that they can carry fewer enchanted items. That generally translates to vulnerability to magic. The other big problem is the inability to use standard weapons and shields; a griffon's choices are limited.

I think this is a great choice for a newbie in classes that griffons do well in: barbarian, shaman, and priest. Griffons are very durable at low level, and the combination of endurance and fly makes exploration much easier. Balance in the endgame is fine as well, and the race is more forgiving of a few misplaced attribute points.

They also make decent scouts as well. Their large size allows them to deal some decent damage, the only draw back is the lack of places to get some decent bows.

Halflings:

Pro: Innate Hide, Sneak and resistance to magic.

Con: Small size, vulnerable to blunt damage, and unable to see in the dark.

Not being able to see in the dark is easily overcome, but you need a way to get infravision through items or flasks, or a glowing item. In return for the glowing item you won't be able to hide and sneak while wearing it, therefore not being able to see in the dark with this race it is a con.
