I wasn't aware that griffons recieved weapons until today. I happened to be exploring and ran into a weapon shop just for griffons. My question is, are weapons for griffons really necessary for the game? Or do most griffon characters only use weapons for RP purposes? Is there a command to compare the abilities of different weapons? (claws vs. daggers, for example)

1) Necessary? Depends who you ask. Your character will generally do more damage with a weapon than with claws, yes.

2) I'd say most griffon characters of higher levels use primarily weapons.

3) Not sure...try <compare claws polearm>

Side note, it might be useful for you to take time to visit the griffon island (after learning where it is IC, of course). Lots of history and gear for griffons there. :)

Griffon weapons can be useful since there are quite a few skills that are completely useless to a griffon without weapons. They're specially made so only griffons can wield them so it isn't like just anybody can buy one and use it. Personally I thought they were a great addition and one long overdue when they were put in. I've never tried comparing a weapon with claws, but depending on what you're fighting, your class, and your level a weapon will probably be more useful in many instances.

Weapons also allow you to do things like:
-reach (for attacking/tripping purposes0
-parry (very useful)
-deal elemental attacks
-some other stuff i can't think of right now.

Unfortunately, there is no command to test the effectiveness of claws vs. weapons. But it's simple enough to do a practical test on a few NPCs.

Remember, though, that it's a relationship that keeps changing. Griffon talons become stronger with each level. Yet available weapons also become stronger, both because you can find & protect better ones, and because you can use learned armed combat skills.

Griffons who are just starting out (Amateur/Novice) have no need of weapons. Most high-level griffons will want a weapon in their inventory, to increase their tactical options if nothing else.

This is something you might want to discuss in-game with other griffons - especially high-level griffons that share your class.

Griffon weapons are superior to claws on many ways. There is only a certain few reasons I would prefer claws before weapons. Them being if you don't have a durable griffon weapon which can be hard to find and rather use your claws on adamantite or water hides to not break them. Bering a griffon barbarian and enjoying the savageness of fury and wild fighting. Or having weapons that are too low lvl to hurt certain NPCs that you can hurt using your claws.

Weapons are also a good way to take advantage of racial weaknesses, i.e. blunt, iron, etc.

You'd be surprised what a differance weapons made for griffons would do for you, that is if your character is a griffon. I use to remember how annoying it was being a Merc griffon with very little weapons to be found. Now, it saddens me that they have all they weapons for them and the only merc griffon to be found is a female one in Teron (of all places). However, you will have a problem with your claws when those wearing armor and have a great defense begin to be your target. You'll find out that the claws aren't enough for what plagues Pyrathia. That's why there are griffon weapons.

I'd wish they brought the merc class back to griffons.
