Howdy. I just started up a new character on SK and spent the morning running him through the Taslamaran collegium. Now I've sent him into Exile for the first time, and he can't get into the Hart and Rose Inn... I can see the courtyard by doing a l ne but when I try to go there with ne I end up on barbican avenue (as if i had gone north). and a message that "alas, you cannot go that way". Why on earth not? is there some other way to enter the inn?

or was there some kind of special event going on and I should try back later?

That's bizarre. I assume the exile center looked like it normally does, with no... oddness. Specifically, a lot of pink and purple words. If not, then try it again and copy and paste what the MUD says?

Unless you were in a place with all those pink words suggested above, which happens on certain special occasions, I don't know why you would've gone north instead of northeast.

You weren't flying and got blown off course by strong winds, were you?

The wrought iron gate is open.
You see The Courtyard of the Hart and Rose.

You walk north.

Barbican Avenue
You are upon a narrow, cobbled avenue running in a northerly
direction, climbing gently away from the centre of the city. The road is
well maintained, hedged on either side by the tall, timber-framed houses
typical of Exile. The stone-lined gutters run with fresh water, the air
relatively clear of the usual city taint of smog and night-soil, of
close pressed bodies and horse manure. Instead, the atmosphere is one
underlain with the scent of honeysuckle and rose blossom which, with the
verdant green scramble of ivy, wreath many of the houses along the road.
It's raining lightly, very hot, and very windy.

A young male human is strolling around here in a set of red-brown clothing.

You walk south.

Is there something with your client that causes you to go north then east?

Try typing out the whole northeast and see how that does. If it works, then there's something with your client, I'd think.

Yeah, I'd say it's a client's speedwalking function. Which, while fantastic, don't work so well for SKs.

Actually Nate, this happens with my mud client, wintin. What actually happens when you type 'ne' is you walk north, then you walk east. I bit of a problem when you want to actually walk in the direction northeast. To solve it, you need to capitalize the first letter: Ne, Nw,Se, Sw. This gets old, so I made aliases for these: ne -> Ne and so on. Hope this helps.

That sounds like a quite old client or that it has been written for MuDs with only N,E,S,W directions. The original code base of DikiMud for example does not support those directions like NE,NW,SE,SW.
It's possible, that your client already has a built-in alias for typing NE making N and E. When you can find that alias you can remove it and everything should work just fine.

Soumds most like direction-stacking. 'ne' means you wanted north, then east. If 'Ne' is the command for Northeast, then 'Nene' means a 'walk' command to go northeast, then north, then east.

Make sense now? :)
