In your particular case, Mezcao, I think someone is taking care of you--just a matter of an imm flagging you for the faith.

Generally speaking, as long as they are IC and appropriate, there is no limit. If prayers become annoying, are inane, or seem overly presumptuous, prayer privileges can be revoked and/or curses handed down.

The vast majority of times, however, the prayers I hear are perfectly acceptable.

That happened to me once.

I've gotten some worried PMs from people who think they might be in danger of praying too often. In my experience, the majority of players are probably too cautious with prayers rather than too flippant. There's nothing wrong with a player praying ICly a couple times per playing session.

Let me give some examples of times I've removed prayer from a player. In the last few weeks, I've removed prayer privileges from three players. The following were the scenarios:

Situation 1: Player was complaining about something (OOC prayer). I told him to deal with it ICly. Player complains again. I told him to handle it IC and not to pray again. Player complains again. Prayer privileges revoked.

Situation 2: Player prays OOCly asking for advice on how to play a character. We chat briefly. Player prays again, wanting to keep the conversation going. I ask him to stop praying. Player prays again. Prayer privileges revoked.

Situation 3: Basically the same as situation 1, except I told him to send an e-mail to an imm and he just kept going.

In these case, all were OOC prayers and all had received warnings to stop praying. You aren't guaranteed a warning, of course, but generally you'll get one. A prayer deliberately designed to be obnoxious (for example, a pink blinking prayer designed simply to annoy imms) would naturally be dealt with pretty roughly, but an earnest prayer is handled pretty fairly, IMO.

I have never, to my recollection, removed prayer privileges from anyone for an IC prayer, even if it was hostile, disrespectful, or antagonistic (although I have slayed players for such prayers). Generally, my rule of thumb is IC punishments for IC infractions and OOC punishments for OOC infractions--and removing prayer is an OOC punishment, IMO.

So, to sum up, I don't think this is something the majority of you have to worry about. If anything, I think we see too few prayers.

Perhaps its a good rule of thumb to count to ten and then think "Do the Imms really care about this" before praying OOCly. I know I could have saved myself a few embarrassments that way.

When the prayer command is used and other are around do they see the person praying? Or for IC prayer, just emote the prayer?

I guess what I'm trying to ask is is the prayer command strictly for the player to communicate with the IMM's or is it also an IC tool?

Such as:

Pray Oh Lord of All that is Honorable, I seek guidance to (blah, blah whatever the situation is)

This way if an IMM wishes to RP or communicate with you it's their option if they have the time, but IC you're just continuing a train of thought or scenario. Do others around see you pray when you use the pray command or just emote it and not worry with the Pray command?

:-?

Mortals see no echo when you pray. Thats why just using the pray command after being resurrected is a bad idea; the priest won't know you've said a prayer.

Thanks Benzo, just wasn't sure. I know when Rezz'd I always Emote the thanks and such, but I was wondering more from just an RP perspective, so I suppose the best thing is to just emote it all, unless I want to take a chance of the IMM interaction. I know those exchanges have been some of my favorite times on SK.

Praying to the Immortals is not visible, but the social prayer is.
