Post subject:  Mutter/whisper command equivalent?

My first post! :D

I've been looking at the help files for communication but I can't find anything about this. In other MUDs, I've seen a command called 'mutter' or 'whisper' that lets you say stuff to a person/group of persons semi-privately. For example, if I type:

Code:
whisper Bob blah blah and blah

Bob sees: thunder whispers to you, "blah blah and blah"
Everyone else sees: thunder whispers to Bob, "blah ... ... blah" (or some other combination of real words and ...)

Is it possible using the commands in this MUD, or am I limited to 'tell' if I want to say something privately? At first I thought that 'sayto' here worked like this, but I just read that it "directs the comment to one player in particular, though all players awake will still see it". So if I'm RPing with A and B and I want to whisper something just to A, how do I do it so that B can have a chance of overhearing it?

Thanks in advance!

People have made suggestions for something like this in the past, but they've never found their way to implementation.

The best method of private conversation is via 'tell' or 'gtell'. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the game that does what you're looking for.

I wish there was a whisper command in game. I hate having to resort to tells to do that.

I usually do a combination of a tell and an emote.

Emote whispers something to thunder.

tell thunder "I would be careful around her... she has strange habits..."

That's a good idea.

When done right, the whisper command is alot of fun. It isn't actually that hard to code to my knowledge.

It is a combination of an emote

$N leans over and whispers in $S ear.

is what the room sees basically.

Because, what's the point of whispering if you have to send a tell since tells are technically "voices in your head" *snickers* (only here is hearing voices in your head a good thing)

I have also seen people emote leaning over to whisper and then using 'blah blah blah' but the problem is, then others in the room hear it and will act like they did. (me included!)

Or emote and then use $N says to $S, '*softly* I think so-and-so is hot!'

Whisper would be nice to have!!!!!

There's nothing wrong with the tell equivalent. The say equivalent is..well..you know how in rl, there are some people who just CANNOT whisper to save their life? Yeah. besides, if a whisper is done RIGHT, the hearer of thw whisper is filling in a lot of the pieces in his head because the volume is so low.

While this probably won't be added it could have some usefulness. This comes to mind primarily when a person is already using tells with multiple people or somebody they can't detect. This way you can use whisper without risk of somebody replying and dropping your contact with the invisible/hidden/dead guy.

Most people simply do what was already mentioned. An emote followed by a tell to the person in question.

Doesn't work on strangers.
