Post subject:  Nifty things before says and tells

Ok, I have seen a couple people put some nifty things before what they say or tell you to reflect their vocal quality. What I want to know is how one sets up an alias to do this rather than having to type it out. One person told a friend of mine how to do it, but I still can not get get it to work right. I plan on using just the alias system provided within SK as I have not purchased Zmud, yet. If anyone can give me any help that would be great.

alias sy say $4&*

so when you type...

sy Hello everyone.

it will look like this

You say 'Hello everyone.'

$4 being the color code for red, and &* meaning "and variable"...you would just have to use sy instead of say.

===========================================

alias sy say *grumbly* &*

when you type...

sy I hate my life.

will come out...

You say '*grumbly* I hate me life.'

In general, I don't recommend doing this.

Plain colors can be ok (especially for to indicate particularly evil/goodie), but some like black/gray conflict with clients, and multiple colors can make things really hard to read on GMud.

Mood can be better conveyed by emote/pemote/action rather than *feeling* marks in says, though, and I encourage you to find better ways than always saying *grumbly* before you talk.

*smile* in tells is the worst, though.

It would be used in conjunction with emote, pemote and action. All of which I use a lot with my character. I just want to add a bit more mood to things with the way she talks and considering there is no whisper command, it is hard to tell when she is talking normally (which is no louder than a whisper) and shouting without using the exclaim, which would be a far stretch with the background she has, the closest would be a normal say.

What I've seen recommended before is doing things in two commands:

pemote voice is just louder than a whisper.
say <whatever>

The first pemote you might want to alias if you're going to use it a lot. There's something to be said for variety, though. Sometimes you can use the text itself to suggest tone:

"Er ... is someone there?"
"He did WHAT?"

However, putting actions in spoken language (like Benzo's "Hello. *smiles*" example) or putting spoken words in emotes and pemotes is considered bad form. Opinion on colored text is mixed, but I'd encourage you not to use it. You're not adding any meaning, because there's no agreement on what different colors mean. You're also creating a visual distraction and obscuring the coded color of the language you use. Save the fancy colors for titles, and perhaps a few words of your description.

It's great to have fellow roleplayers interested in colorful conversations, but you'll do fine - even better - without special effects.

I'll somtimes use sounds in tells... With the *'s...I figure tells to be relaying your own speak to someone elses mind, and then figure that it wouldn't be impossible to relay sounds as well...

For the most part I find these things to be annoying, and a lisp or stutter in someone's speech does not necessarily mean that they will do that through mental telepathy. And that is what a tell is.

Everytime I see these things in tells though I just want to strangle the person. The same thing goes with emoting actions during a say. That's what the emote command is for, use it.

I much prefer the emote/pemote for sound or intonation/pitch/odd sounding voice. Filling up a say or tell with actions is a quick shortcut, but if you are trying to do quality RP, shortcuts don't cut it.
