If you are deafened, a swashie can't taunt you. As you are also unaffected by all bard songs.

If the swashie is taunted now, I don't know.

If you deafen yourself, then taunt cannot effect you period, nor can any bard song.

If you deafen the swashbuckler I have no idea what happens.

Bards fail their songs a lot though if deafened

That is my question. If I deafen the swashie, should they be able to still taunt. I think that I can go either way on this. If deafen does not affect them at all, I am not sure that I agree with that.

Code:
[Spells help] deafness

Syntax: cast deafness <victim>

This spell renders the target character deaf.  Thus, they cannot hear
speech.  So thorough is the effect, that the victim cannot even hear
yelling.  It's impossible to receive an order while deaf.  It also
reduces the chance to recite scrolls, cast most spells, give orders,
persuade others and severely hampers the ability to sing.  While
deafness can be used as a protection of sorts from bard songs, it
only partially protects against the sonic wave of a power chord.

Deafness also reduces the chance to cast spells successfully, probably under the reasoning that you have a chance to mispronounce a syllable if you can't hear yourself talk. You might think the same would apply to taunt, but taunting isn't necessarily a word.

Code:
help taunt
[Skills help] taunt

Syntax: taunt <victim>

Swashbucklers can use their razor-sharp tongues to infuriate bystanders and
cause them to attack in a wild rush.  A well-aimed taunt can even cause
someone who is already fighting one person to switch to the taunting
swashbuckler as well, even if they don't understand the swashbuckler's
language!  The mocking tone of a well-delivered taunt is a language all its
own.  Some spell casters may even lose their concentration when taunted by
experienced swashbucklers.

The help files make it seem like taunt is verbal. If taunt is verbal then I think that deafness should affect a swashies ability to taunt.
