Hello.

After playing MMORPG's for the last 6 years, I've decided to try something new.

I love to RP, and after searching many sites for the right MUD, here I am.

I've read everything helpful on the website...The Mythology, the FAQ's, the Help and Newbie pages. But I still have some pretty silly newbie questions that I believe only players can help with.

Feel free to point and snicker all you want. ;)

1) I was given a "lunch-sized sack" to begin with, among a few other things. Is this sack empty, or does it have food in it? If empty, how do I fill it? If full, how do I eat what's in it?
I keep getting "You are hungry" messages, and can't figure out how to eat, or where to get food.
I've tried eat <lunch, sack, etc>, to no avail. It says it's not edible, or that I don't have that item.

2) The room in finally got to when I logged off for the morning had someone named "Sef" dishing out broth. How do I ask for food from NPC's? How do I communicate with them at all? Is there a command for that?

3) I got myself stuck in a room for an hour or so. It had exits East and North. Now, I had just come through the North door, and knew I didn't want to go that way.
When I typed "e", the "irondoor is closed". Fine. I "open door"ed. Got the "You opened the ironwood door" message. Great. I type "e" again, figuring I could now go east. Nope. "ironwood door is closed".
Huh? "Open door" again, says "door is already open"!
I did that for an hour before I just "recall"ed and ended up in the infirmery.
So...what was I doing wrong?

4) How do I learn spells when it gets to that point? (If I ever get out of the Colliegate(sp) )

5) What are these "newbie schools" I've read about?

6) How do people mark OOC in SK? Or is OOC just not used at all? Are the (())'s common? Or some other way?

7) Is this too many questions to ask? Will I be tarred and feathered if I post more after my next adventure, listening to the Peackeeper drone on and on about dieties? :P

Thanks in advance for the help.

Please, if you have anything...suggestions, hints, comments, that will make my learning experience a bit easier, they would be very much appreciated!

SK Character: That'd be telling
typing 'command' will give you a list of all the actions / commands at your disposal. This should halpe you figure out most of the issues you are having.

If you are hungry and wish to eat:
take [item] sack (take all.[item] if there are several of the same thing)
eat [item]

the door problem you are facing, instead of open door, open the direction you wish to go, E.G. 'Open East', then you can 'e' to walk east.

Look for me on-line (wortsenawl) and I will gladly hook up with you and answer all your questions and offer as much help as i can.

re ooc vs IC - most everything is IC. If you feel the need for an ooc communication prefix it with "ooc:"

There's bread in your sack. "Look in sack", or "l in sack will work". "Get bread sack" will get the bread out. To get all the bread out at once, use "get all.bread sack". To put something in the sack "put ___ sack" or likewise "put all.___ sack". This works with robes, backpacks and any other container you may find.

Someone else is going to have to help you. I don't know Sef. I don't start in many kingdoms. However, to speak to an NPC, the "say" or " ' " command works. Usually there's a word trigger, if they're going to give you something. Like . . . NPC says to you, "Would you like something to eat?" The word trigger would be eat.

Try "open east." Doesn't make much sense, though if the eastern door was the ironwood one you kept opening.

Read "help mentor." There are actual player characters who can help you learn (easiest for a true newbie) or there are a number of trainers scattered across the realm for your use. There's not any "one stop spell/skill training" after you leave the newbie area . . . which leads to your next question.

5) What are these "newbie schools" I've read about?

The Collegium is one. Each kingdom has a starting point for new characters. "Newbie Schools" is what we affectionately refer to them as. Just a safe place for you to start out your training and exploration.

If you must use OOC just make sure it's at the beginning of your say or tell. Some use parenthesis, I use a colon. Just so that it's marked.

No such thing as too many questions. Hope I helped.

There are the "take" and "get" commands that will allow you to get food from the sack. The sack is a container. You can see the contents of a container by using either the "look" or "examine" commands. In this case you would want to type in "look sack". If you need a list of available commands, just type in "command".

2) The room in finally got to when I logged off for the morning had someone named "Sef" dishing out broth. How do I ask for food from NPC's? How do I communicate with them at all? Is there a command for that?

The command you are probably looking for is "list". This will list the available items for sale at any shopkeeper. After that you can use the "buy" command to purchase an item.

Try opening in the direction that you wish to go in. "Open e", or "open east".

You will need to find a NPC (or player) that can teach you the spell in question, and use the "train" command to learn it.

5) What are these "newbie schools" I've read about?

Every character starts out in the newbie school of the nation that they selected.

Generally, ooc talking is frowned upon in the mud.

This question is irrelevant.

Cure for newb hunger:
open sack
examine sack
get all sack
eat bread

Cure for NPC handling:
train <----brings up list of spells/skills they train
train stat <-----brings up list of stats they train
train <skill/spell name> <----trains the skill/spell you want once

list <----brings up list of things a vendor sells
buy <item> <----purchases whatever you wanted from the list

Oh, and when you are opening doors just open the direction. Like...

open east

or simply...

open e

Doors will close themselves during the "big tick" where the area resets.

Welcome to SK and I'll try to answer your questions so you can move on. I'm sure someone else will follow after me and refine the answers.

The lunch sized sack is a container. You can "look in sack", "put coin sack", "put all.coin sack", "get bread sack" <--The one you want, "get all sack", etc and so on.

Sef is a shopkeeper. There are many shopkeepers in the game, some of whom you wouldn't expect to be one. Type list at a shopkeeper to see what's for sale. Then buy whatever it is you want. If there are two silver things for sale and you want to buy the second one, "buy 2.silver" will do it.

There could be two ironwood doors and you might have caught it at the reset after you came from the north. If you "open e", you'll try to open the east door. You don't have to know the name of the door to do it. This is also true of doors you'll later have to unlock. And to avoid the confusion that many have felt when trying to unlock doors, "unlock ne" may unlock the northeast door, but only if you're not wearing a NEcklace or something like that. N, E, S, W won't do that but NE, SE, SW, NW could have that "you can't unlock that" message, depending on what you're wearing or carrying.

IF you're a spellcaster of some sort, you can learn spells right away. Typing spell will show you your list of spells you can learn. The same as typing skill for your list of skills and song for your list of songs, all of which depend on your class. Now, to learn these for the first time, you have to visit a trainer. Typing train at every new sort of NPC you meet is often a good idea until you get an idea of who the trainers are. Doing that will give you a list of skills, spells or songs you can learn from that particular trainer. Each trainer teaches different things. You may also wish to "train stat" at the different trainers. Again, each trainer will teach different stats. Such as "train stat wis" to move your wis higher.

You're in a newbie school now, or your char is. Taslamar's newbie school if I remember that shopkeeper correctly. When you chose your kingdom, you were sent to that kingdom's newbie school.

If you put OOC in some form at the beginning of where you're going OOC, that is acceptable. People prefer OOC in tells instead of says but if you're talking to more than one person or if you don't know who you're talking to (haven't greeted them yet), then OOC says are completely acceptable.

Any more questions? The more comfortable you are in the game, the more fun you'll have and the more fun everyone meeting you will have.

You're welcome. As far as suggestions, you could type "mentor" in game to get someone mentor level or above to possibly respond to you. Ask them OOC or IC questions, train skills or spells or songs from them, tell them you're totally lost, whatever. OF course, there has to be one from your kingdom online for someone to hear it.

If typing mentor doesn't get you anywhere, type "who" and look through the who list for someone who sounds important enough and send them a tell.

Welcome to SK! Have fun! Get addicted fast! ;)

Your questions have all been answered, so I will simply say: welcome to SK! I have had more friends who I forced to try the game quit after not being able to eat their bread than I can count! So congrats on not giving up. If you are playing and are having any other syntax problems or any other questions feel free to message me on YIM: mourningsun2417. I'm a realtive new player to (especially compare to some members here), but if it's a simple question I should be able to ask. I'm at my computer almost all the time.

Good luck with the game and I hope you enjoy it. And if you decide to reroll any time soon... make a darkie!

Welcome to Shattered Kingdoms! There's global roleplay(s) going on, and players are more mature lately than usual. Lots of fun to be had.

If you don't mind the questions:

1. How did you find out about SK?
2. What MMORPGs have you played?

I have started several characters at the collegium, though I didn't keep any of them.

Sef is the guy who sells food. They tell you this in the game right away so I don't think I'm giving away anything I shouldn't. You can eat the arms of the students that you chop off in the training rooms, but that seemed barbaric to me. When you run out of bread you have to go to Sef and buy broth.

"list" is the command that shows you what he has to sell and what it costs.
"worth" shows how much money you have.
"buy broth" buys you the food.

If you have a little money and wander around in the collegium you can find places to buy better weapons and things too. Don't forget to stop at the quartermaster, they tell you in the game but I missed it the first time. If you figure out how to salute him, he'll give you some standard equipment.

(If I've said anything I shouldn't Sombody Who Knows More can let me know and I'll edit it out right away.)

Welcome to SK. I love this game.

Marilyn

If you are really stuck, look for someone that sounds prominant on the who list (type "who" and push return) and send the an out of character tell like "ooc I'm new to muds - I feel really stupid, how do I open doors?"

Or you could do the above IC, telling someone "I'm feeling silly - I'm stuck and can't open this door in the training college"

Failing that the help files are pretty comprehensive. If you go to the main shattered kingdoms page you can read through the help on your browser rather than typing help spell. It has the same info that is available in game, but you can scan through all the commands.

Oh, and welcome it's great to see someone dragged away from those horrible graphical "no rp enforced" games. There is still hope.

Edit: My top newbie tip is - "get 2.sword sack" get's the third sword from the sack. It took me ages when I was new to figure this one out.
