I've been playing a bit, and well, I'll admit I'm discouraged. Two good friends of mine have CONSTANTLY been attacking my choice of making a human, well, anything. They insist that humans are the worst race, because they can be beaten by anything else (etc. etc). Like, for example, I wanted to make a human merc... and immediately they say I should have made a Giant or a Dwarf instead.

=( Can someone help re-encourage me, and give me some pros to being human?

RP aspect - other players can better advise for PK.

I'm willing to bet that you are far more familiar with the experiences of a human than a dwarf, or elf, or gnome, or whatever. It will less-complicate your RP, since you won't have any racial things to worry about (Height, having wings, etc.) If you have a really neat idea for a character, and want to keep the focus on some particular aspect of that character, humans are ideal.

Humans are good at anything, but not great. That's what they're supposed to be. The only disadvantage is a lack of infravision, which shouldn't be a problem as a merc - just get a glowing item, and you're set.

Every race has its advantages and weaknesses. Dwarf mercs have higher con than humans, and they get the axe bonus for speed and accuracy, but they have size small weapons, lower dex, and lower str. Giants have giant-sized weapons, higher str and higher con, but still lower dex, face a weakness in willpower (easy to charm/fear/etc), and if you're in a cabal/trib, forget effective spellcasting/leadership (low int/wis/cha).

And as Othet said, humans provide a solid base for RP - if you aren't sure where you want to go...humans make it easy for you. ;)

Thanks! =) I have no problem RPing the other races, but I just find Humans and, just in real life, their ability to be completely spontaneous, and sometimes a bit out of character, refreshing. Even "Good" people in real life have rare moments of... not so goodness (Not saying it's an excuse to break alignment, especially on a regular basis, but I think it allows a slightly "looser" way to play, yes?)

Anyway, thanks a bunch for your replies!

And yeah, I know a Human Merc won't be the most... PK friendly, but I'm more in it for the RPing anyway...

Does a Human Merc even stand a chance of getting into the PK heavy Cabals, though?

Human's are very good at most classes.

The shorter the lifespan of the race, typically, the more overall stats they get.

Think of it that way. ;)

As for human mercs in cabals? I know of many! MC and Hammer both are always stacked with human mercs.

I think almost every tribunal has a human merc, as well. As a gray human merc, you can pretty much be a part of 3/4 of any playergroup on the mud.

That's pretty sweet, imho.

I think you missed the point - human mercs are entirely capable of ripping face, and are more likely to own in the hands of your average player than a giant or a dwarf, because the strengths and weaknesses are averaged out (meaning you, as a player, have less to compensate for). I know of dozens of human mercenaries that completely dominated in PK. Any class/race/cabal combo can be total win in the hands of the right player.

And if you're being denied from a cabal because of your race/class combo, that cabal leader needs some serious cursage. Acceptance into any cabal is about RP, not PK.

To add to the encouragement.

If your basing your choice PURELY on PK, then it comes down to what you wish to spec in. If your going to spec in weapons that are accurate, then the extra dex will help you parry more. If your going to spec in weapons designed to do lots of damage, then human may not be the best.

In truth, I've seen human mercs take down giant mercs. PK isn't purely about stats (although that helps) its about how you minimize your weaknesses and maximize your strengths. IMO, humans are one of the better races for anything, but not usually the best race. Its just the way they're supposed to be.

Base your decision on those facts, and on what you want to RP.

humans make great mercs--every other race has a pretty tough racial melee weakness. Some people swear by helf mercs, which is why I always try to have at least on cold iron weapon for either me or my charm/animates to deal with them quickly. With the new psyonic damaging weapons, even giants can get ripped to pieces easy.

Keep in mind that this entire conversation happened because of your distaste of Night Elves in WoW. Most of the conversation started in jest, but, yeah, it did go on too long. I simply said that Humans had average statistics, that there wasn't really anything special about them. Never said they "sucked," just that they weren't the best at whatever you wanted to do.

I've had alot of human characters. In fact, I mainly choose humans when I go with Merc, simply because they're the more balanced of the races, which mixes well with the more balanced class(My opinion, of course). As far as the Cabal/Tribunal thing, that was mainly about you being new at the game, moreso than your race/class combination.
