When you are flying, there is also the option to fly higher into the air by using the "up" command. What's the advantage to flying higher in the air? Is there any advantage to using different flight speeds? They don't appear to do anything different.

It doesn't actually do anything different. That is a incomplete "feature" left over from ROM. It's something that I've thought about making actually work at some point when the AI has the capability of dealing with people who can fly out of melee range.

It's also a fun feature to use while idle, flying up and down over and over, annoying the [REDACTED] out of everyone else around you.

Good question, though. I never really thought about it or knew the answer.

it would be cool if the position grid was 3 dimensional to allow for flying characters...

Thats what I'm talking about, an 18 spot formation instead of 9. A row of options above and when you fly down on top of centaurs and griffon or pets, you mount.

Interesting idea. It'd be tough, because I feel a lot of areas in SK shouldn't allow that many people in one room. :P

I think flying over mounts to mount would be unnecisarily hard. i think mount <pet> is a much better way. A 3x3x2 grid (or even 3x3x3) would not be that hard to make. Of course depending on how organized the code is, it could become difficult.

if you wanted to be fancy (and spend large amounts of time on this) you could make the formation positions from the size of the creature and have a height limit, and compensate by having something bad for small and tiny creatures.
