Hos easy is it for a network admin to tell if some one has been telnetting, is it logged? Or if it is how often do most check these logs, I would like to know because I have a lot of time at work where I sit and stare and I could be using it to be productive, like play SK, thanks.

It actually depends on the company. If a company wants to log those things. It is extremely easy. If you work for a smaller firm, generally they don't do that as much while in larger firms they do that more regularly and they spend more time making sure the company's resources are being used properly. These are gross generalities.

Best thing I can say is to by sly about finding out by talking to the tech dept. Ask them in passing about their monitoring. You have to be careful about how you ask because if you give it away that you plan on using company resources for SK (or anything else in that regard). They will single you out. And then you will never get a chance to.

Given what I know, its very easy for a network admin to log traffic and catch someone goofing off.

Thats really tough to say. You have three types of network admins. The first type are paranoid, lock down the network from most non-work sites, and monitor the traffic carefully. The second is paranoid, locks down the network from most non-work sites, and forgets it thinking he has done a good job. (For the most part, this is the case). The third is the lazy one, leaves it open, and usually doesn't monitor it. Without working there, its tough to tell. Usually after working a while there, you can sort of get an idea. If your working in a big company with a small IT infrastructure, you'll likely be okay. You'll be safer if there is a lot of HTTP/Telnet/etc chatter on your network, as the SK connection will get lost with the rest of it...

Really, you just have to feel it out and hope you don't get burnt. Hope that helps. :P

Even 'worse' - the Telnet protocol (which is what 99% of MUDs use) is pretty much an "in the clear" text transfer medium, so that even without knowing what you're doing on port 1996 they could quite quickly find out that it isn't work-related.

We the administrators of the game encourage you to obey the rules of your workplace: but ask if you can play at lunchtime! :) :D
