Does art help bard songs or do bards only need art if they acquire spells?

Art affects songs that a save would be appropriate. Songs of Sleep, Silence, and Death, are examples. It also affects all chords.

I think that this is wrong. I think art affects only chords and the use of scrolls.

given how often this question is asked, can we please have something added to the helpfile on art to clarify this? i swear i've seen this question at least half a dozen times, and the same "i think" and "i'm pretty sure" answers come up every time.

Here's how I understand it:

1. Art comes into play for anything that involves a save.

2. The following bard skills involve saves:
- songs of dancing, to resist getting caught up in the dance
- songs of sleep, to resist full sleep as a non-combatant
- songs of silence, to resist full entrancement
- power chords, to resist their side effects
- scrolls
- persuade

(Songs of dancing is the only one I'm not sure about. There -might- be something else besides a will save to avoid the effect.)

3. Therefore, art is useful for the things listed above.

Anyway, it's not a priority stat since much of the bardic skill set isn't affected. Bards have enough problems distributing their points elsewhere, so I wouldn't bother with art trains unless you plan to make heavy use of offensive scrolls or persuade.

When are bards getting songs of deletion?
