Right, so here I am minding my own business gleefully killing stuff in the cave system, when I enter a room with four kobolds and a germish'din. I unlock the door and open it to get in, enter, kill all of them, and then head for the only exit: Quote: In a rough-hewn stone cell Hastily chiseled from the living rock, this enclosure is about ten hands from floor to ceiling and about six paces in width and depth, with no windows, only the door and the feeding slot cut into it. Hardly a comfortable living space, especially for, say, a giant, but there are rumors about of far worse living conditions. At least the floor is covered with a comfortable amount of hay, and it smells likes it is changed not too infrequently. Obvious exits: sw(closed) However, when I try to unlock it (I still have the key in my inventory), I get the following message: Quote: [HP:100%] [ME: 58%] [PE:100%]
> unlock sw You can't do that. This wouldn't be a grave concern of mine if SW wasn't the only way out of here. I like what you've done with the place, but I'm not really all that interested in staying forever. Am I completely missing something here? Sorry for the bother, it's probably just a case of me being a noob. |

You're carrying a sword or something else that starts with sw. The code for finding objects checks your inventory first, so that's the thing you're trying to unlock. Get around this by typing the entire direction, i.e. unlock southwest. |

Ah, one more thing before I forget (might as well ask here instead of flooding the board): How on earth do you actually cast 'continual light'? I'm sure its supposed to be targeted on an item, but whenever I cast it on anything I carry or hold/wield (I tried hold x too), I'm kindly informed that I do not actually hold this. If I proceed to examine self, it would seem this claim is refuted since I am indeed holding whatever it is. What's the trick here? |

It must be in your inventory, if I remember correctly. You can't be holding it nor wielding it. |

To cast continual light, the object must be in your inventory and not part of your equipment. Remove helm ->You remove your helm of head-protecting. c 'continual light' helm ->(spam, spell lag) A helm of head-protecting starts to glow (or whatever the spammage is). in -> (glowing) A helm of head-protecting |

Thanks a lot, guys. Sheesh, that was quite self-evident. I'm pretty thankful there's a board for people with my level of cunning. |

Everyone, with the possible exception of me, starts out as a newb and progresses to experienced. (I never progressed.) |
