I hate to be asking this, but I'm at my (admittedly inconsiderable) wit's end here.

I'm a newbie, and as a newbie (with an adventuring fetish) I die. A lot. And most of the time it doesn't really matter, 'cause the SK clergy are incredibly nice guys and I can recover my corpse. However, I happened to die and incidentally had IRL stuff to attend to; the server rebooted, and my corpse was gone. This is all well and good, but when you're very naked, very poor, famished, and utterly clueless, that leaves you in a very sore position.

I had previously acquired the bulk of my wealth from a very helpful mentor, but since I hate being a charity case and hate not knowing my own way around things, I set out to try to build up a small fortune on my own. I went to Skybolt and picked up stuff on the ground to wear (nice of people to leave it there, I must say), and then other stuff to sell to merchants. Here's where I ran face-first into a wall of an obstacle, though, 'cause no merchant seemed particularly interested in my stuff. I tried in Exile, in Nerina, and in Sith'a'niel, but even places named "Cloths and stuffs" are curiously void of interest in... well, cloths and stuffs. The mage guy in Exile selling Arcane Glyph-warded silk wanted none of the silk gloves I had found, etcetera. Is there something I am missing here? I did everything I could in all places and checked for newbie errors, ie. cast tongues on myself and released invisibility if it were active, but alas.

tl;dr: how the heck do I sell stuff?

note: Eihwaz was friendly enough to escort me to a place once (in Sith'a'niel I think) where I could sell without trouble, but I haven't been able to locate it since. So I know it's possible, I'm just confused as to the mechanics of the issue.

The places that will buy just about anything are called pawn shops. Someone would probably show you if you asked.

Other than pawn shops, selling stuff in SK is kind of a challenge. Each shop keeper is picky and even then, will only buy stuff until the inventory is full.

More experienced players know which items are good for making money and tend to stuff the stores full. Random stuff that people leave on the ground tends not to be worth anything.

(money is pretty valuable these days even for high level characters, so there doesn't tend to be a lot of free money lying around)

The locations of really good places to sell things is something of a low-level SK secret. For instance, here's a certain mid-level training ground with a guy who'll buy stuff, with NPCs that drop several-plat items. There's a certain jewelry-seller not far from that certain training ground who walks around and...you get the picture.

If I were you, I'd get a hold of one of the more experienced-looking titles on the who list and send a few questions on how to get a little money in your pocket. Hell, you might even ask one of the priests who gives you a rez. It shouldn't take them too long to give you a few hints.

I know this doesn't help you, but just an FYI about your corpse. They are saved across reboots, so it would have still been there. However, corpses do decay after something like 8 hours, I believe. So once the corpse is gone, the items left on the ground won't save across a reboot.

I was quite frustrated by this as well when I started playing (being used to games where any shop keep will buy whatever crap you have in your bags). However, as mentioned, pawn shops are a very good solution. There's one in like.. half of the major cities, and a few scattered elsewhere. It's good to know where a lot are because they will only buy so many items off of you.

As Fluffy suggested, ask some of the more helpful characters you've come across about where they sell stuff. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to give you some tips.

Sell armor to armor shops, weapons to weapon shops, and gems to gem shops. Some shops are just not interested in anything it seems.

And yes, pawn shops buy almost anything.

Also, there are some lowbie locations that are cash cows. If I ever get low on coin, I head there and make a couple obsidian. If you need to find those, ask around ICly

This newbie's statement also begs the question: why are 90% of shops permanently full of inventory? At least give them each a couple of slots to take new merchandise. I think it will relieve some of the frustration and encourage new characters to explore.

Should already be much better. The shopkeepers inventory will be cleared out after a reboot and we now reboot every couple of days.
