Hiya! New player here..logged into SK for the first time a few days ago and have been getting used to the game. Coming from Shadows of Isildur, I'm finding it easy to get around and fall into the swing of things codewise. However, I'm having two problems...

Staying with the same pc...I've gone through a -ton- of pc's already. I just can't seem to stick with one for more than an hour or two it seems, and when I do..I die and retire (I like the concept of perma-death). The other problem, is finding other people to actually rp with. I see the occasional player, but usually they zoom past before I can pop out an emote or even a nod.

So, any advice on sticking with the same character and finding people to roleplay with.

Oh yea, and are there clans low-level pc's can join, or only tribunals/cabals for high ranked pcs? Like the dwarf clans in Vaerlain, are those joinable or for rp purposes.

There are cabals and tribunals, but you have to find them out ICly. There isn't actually any truly 'newbie' or 'lowbie' cabal or tribunal. If you want to start making connections in the game. Make a priest and don't worry about dieing too much. A priest will make you a friend to everyone.

I am just going to make sure, but you do realize that then you die you can be brought back right? It sounds like when you are dying you are making another character. You do not have to do that. You can be brought back from death within this game.

Read help death for more info

PS Well come to SK!!!!!

Welcome! A few things in point form:

1. Permanent-death characters will be difficult to play, there is a lot of peril outside the city walls, and sometimes they will claim even the experienced players' characters' lives. Being dead in Shattered Kingdoms is far from the end, one can gain life again from speaking with priests or other forms of healers, there's help files about these things in case of interest.

2. As a recommendation for a class with the most versatile and greatest survival skillset, it has to be the shaman. They wear light armor, get a shield, and their protective and healing spells keep themselves very self-sufficient. Please try one! Another option might be a paladin.

3. Generally finding others to interact with would be difficult, due to most established characters have some kind of enemies in the game. However, there are usually neutral adventurers who socialize in the inns of the major starting cities. There are maps both in the game and online that show where these locations are.

4. Nerina is probably the most busy city renowned for its neutrality and tribunals in general are easier to gain entrance, and a great way to learn the ropes of the game.

5. If still having extreme difficulties finding interactions and have more questions, try the 'mentor' command while being in the newbie school or the inn, and use 'tell' command to communicate with anyone on the 'who' list.

Good luck!

Yea, I realise that you can be resurrected, I just find once I die I have no will to play further. I dunno, I like the theme, I like the code...I just can't seem to stick with a pc. I'm going to put some thought into the next one when I get home from work. Hopefully stick with it..

edit ; thanks for all the advice, keep it coming! *chuckle* was just what I needed..

Welcome to SK.

What you describe above is exactly my experience of SoI... but anyway... check out the mentor command in game. This will also help as you can use it to get some help in terms of someone showing you the ropes IC.

Just to add something quickly, the newbie questions during character creation determine a character's stats. To make a more durable character, answer questions in such a way that helps with constitution. That particular score makes a tremendous difference at starting levels for new characters. Also 'train stat' at NPC trainers allow further gaining of stats.

Welcome to SK!

If you're having trouble settling with one particular character, perhaps it would help to prepare for it differently than you have been? There's a thread here that has a lot of things you can think about when planning out who your character will be. I find that I'm more willing to stick through dry spells when my character is a distinct person in my imagination, one that I want to see grow and thrive.

Or, if you already put that much planning into it, I'd suggest going the opposite way for a fresh start. Give yourself the roughest of outlines and plunge in. My first successful character had amnesia, because I hadn't the faintest idea what sort of culture or background existed in the game for me to draw from.

I would advise priest or sorceror for making friends, both have abilities that are often called upon. Griffon is an excellent starting race as far as damage and durability go, although you face emnity that way, both for being lighty and non-humanoid, and they're weaker at higher levels.

Good luck, and feel free to ask questions here or IC in game - once you find them or send a tell/mentor request, there are a lot of friendly folks glad to help. :)

First of all, welcome to SK. Second, I think your mistake is actually giving up on characters after death. While it is true that death is discouraging, you have to understand that it is also a very good way to meet some of the most influential people in the game. As a rule of thumb, people love priests for all of their abilities, therefore most priests in the game have tons of people eating out of the palms of their hands because they like resurrections and enchants. Therefore when you die, take the opportunity to start up some RP with a priest, first for life, and then talk to them more after you're back if you want and if they have time to talk.
