There are so many quests out there to break the monotony of leveling that I it surprises me to hear such remarks. Sure area familiarity no longer lets you stay in the same area grinding for five levels but a)There are many more places than there used to b)There are quests in these areas to compensate for the familiarity code.

And there is that wandering around discovering areas can indeed give an exp. boost. Go exploring and finding areas where you can take advantage of the bonus xp.
Some areas may not be 'ideal' but I've found empty nooks and taken advantage the 'recently discovered' thing for a level or two. I don't see what the point of complaining that you can't sit in an area for 5+ levels anymore to level.. To me that sounds positively dull. Secondly, RP can start at level 1, but it's your perogative to plevel up there, don't then complain at higher levels there's nothing to do/no point to exploring the game. Much of the story of your character can be built as you level. *shrugs*
