When someone I have never met before sends me a tell, do I know their name?

I know I see their name, but ic do I mentally know who there are or something?

Just curious how to play it off.

I've always played it as if a tell was a letter that had the correct return address. Otherwise, a priest would never give rezzes to people they haven't met. :P

Honestly this is something I've never been sure about.
But anyone that has talked to Strai will know;

If they know him the reply will be "Hello Mister X"
If they don't know him, the reply is "Hello Mister"

Ive never seen a problem with RPing that you know their name, it is telepathic communication so you would have some sense of who is talking to you.

I always feel dirty when someone I have never met before asks me for a rezz without really giving their name in the tell.

I will still rezz them, usually, because I don't want to grief a newbie.

The player characters in Shattered Kingdoms are all telepathic. I'm not kidding. That's why there's a who list and that's why you can send tells.

Through a strange quirk of fate all of the sentient races in the world
share the ability to mentally communicate with each other from afar.
Doing so is taxing however, drawing upon the same mental reserves with
which mages use to cast their spells. These channels are IN CHARACTER.

Actually most NPCs are also telepathic, if they're sentient races. Dragons can send tells too!

While I recognize that tells are a form of telepathy, that (in my mind) does not always mean you recognize the voice in your head.

If Kouin has never met the chatacter before and you have not given her your name, she is going to ask.

With regards to Rezzes in particular, I feel as though a soul in the river is significantly less tangible of a telepathic communication than a living person. Sure we have spirit sight, but that is still ultimately just being able the see ghosts and if they are in the river, I believe it would be more difficult to differentiate between spirits unless I am given a name to focus on.

When people ask Kouin for rezzes, she expects certain things from them, especially if it is the first request. A name is always one of them. She is not going to offer prayers to Algorab on behalf of simply a voice in her mind that she has never met. This is not to say I purposefully try to grief newbies or lowbies. But, I don't see how asking for a name is griefing them.

Anyway, just my thoughts on the matter.

This discussion reminds me of one I read while ago of "wouldn't it make sense we had something like voice adjectives that people 'heard' when we weren't known/visible to them?" Makes more sense than a standard adjective...

If not greeted:
Amadeo tells you 'Hello?' <-- makes no sense.
A deep-blue eyed male elf tells you 'Hello?' <-- makes no sense.
A resonating voice tells you 'Hello?' <-- makes a degree of sense & could even be used when people are hidden or whatever.

I know this thread hasn't been posted in in a while, but I'm inclined to agree with the above poster. Anonyminity (sp?) is nonexistent in this game. Even if you don't greet someone, if you ask them for a rez or speak to them mentally, boom. Cover's blown. Doesn't matter if you can disguise or not, people can always find some way to pick you out.

I would rather have it that all nongreeted tells recieved come as a "resonated male voice" or resonating' female voice". Telling the tone of one's voice and distinguishing gender is simple, but knowing their identity right off the bat is just strange. Just because everyone is mentally linked doesn't necessarily mean that they have to be omniscient. Also, it would make things interesting as when dealing with multiple tells you'd have to be extremely careful if an enemy is taunting you. You could re veal information to them mistakenly. I think that'd be cool.

I dunno, rezzing is a lot lot easier when you see the name from the tell. Its up to you guys, do you want a quick rez or a lotta questions? Cause I can retort to both, not my problem... :P
