Okay, so... I'm new... There. I said it. I'm a newb... I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing! The thing is, I kind of like it here. And I've been here three hours according to my score sheet, so I think that's a good thing?

I've read all the FAQs and help files for newbies. I've scoured this board, and I still find myself going... HUH?

Like training? Sometimes I can practice my skills and other times I keep getting told to go away and get more experience! How do I know what I can train and how much more experience I need? Or does it not show that? And when I level, why doesn't it tell me that I levelled? I have to keep typing WO over and over again.

And then I got kicked out of the pens and I found a city by pure luck but I don't know where to go or what to do now. I really don't like the levelling part. I'd rather get straight to the roleplaying part? Is that possible? Is there some secret hideout to go to where all the rp action is going down?

Anyway, I would very much appreciate any advice, tips, helpful hints that could push me in the right direction.

Thanks!

To find out your level of experience enter "worth". It gives you a rough idea of how far you are to the next level. Because training uses experience, when you have just begun your journey to next level you may find that you are unable to train the appropriate skills.

Also, if you try to train skills above your skill level (if you are an amateur trying to train novice skills, for example [help status]) you will find that more exp is used per train.

As for RP... Your best bet is to simply go to an inn and sit there, because that's where most of what folks like me call 'fountain RP' goes down.

At the moment, it seems like your best bet is to type 'help worth' to figure out things about skills training, and to find people who can help out. Try sending tells to people with titles that seem most like your character's. Most people are quite friendly and quite willing to come RP if you're like "Hey, I'm in city X, I'm lost, and I kinda need a friend" or whatever.

Also, typing "skill" and "spell" might help you out to figure out what abilities you can learn.

In SK it takes experience to train any skill, as well as to level up.

Hit score. This will show you what status you are (for example Amateur) as well as how many levels you are into that status ( Amateur (3)). There are five levels to each status.

Hit skill and spell. You can, in theory, train any of those skills or spells. However, you shouldn't train skills that are past your current status. So if you're an amateur, only train amateur skills.

Hit worth. That's how much experience you have. You'll use up your experience when you train skills at trainers. You can only spend how much you have, so once you spend it all, you'll be told to go get more. Once you get to 'You may advance to the next level' you may go to a trainer and 'train level' (just as you train skills or spells).

For leveling, I highly suggest finding the local inn in that big city and using the mentor command. This will send out a message to high level people from your country that you need help. If you're lucky enough to be contacted by someone, tell them that you're a young person looking on where to train. If this doesn't work (sometimes the right people just aren't on), you can use the area command. This will list areas that are near your level for training. Sending tells to friendly titled people asking them where to train at your status level is also an option. Try to keep things in character though, don't use numbers.

Consider is also an important command. If there's a rabbit you're thinking about killing, type consider rabbit. It'll tell you the difficulty of that NPC compared to your level. Try to stick to perfect matches and tough challenges for leveling.

As far as RP, inns are a good place to start. You never, ever have to level if you don't want to. But other than fountain RPing, there isn't much else to do.

Thanks to you both! I'm sure that will be a great help.

What exactly do you mean by 'fountain roleplaying'? Is that like when everyone stands around the fountain in the center of town no matter what the weather is like?

Does this mean there is 'real roleplaying' elsewhere to be found?

Well, sure there's other roleplay, but what I mean by fountain roleplay is exactly that - where people gather around a fountain (or an inn, these days), and roleplay at those central points.

There is other roleplay that doesn't occur at those points, of course, through random run-ins with other characters, religions, cabals... But the best way to get started in the game's roleplay is to hang around at the major city inns (Sith'a'niel, where I suspect you are, or Exile and Teron usually have people about them).

Hey... You're not the only one. ;) Lately, I just happen to be in an inn I'm probably not supposed to be in. :P

sleeper

PS Jardek pretty much covered it. RP is a very loosely defined term, but foutain RP generally is very-low conflict RP with various numbers of people.

Nearly everything was pretty well covered. I would like to note two other things to look at.

Train stat: When you are with a teacher NPC, use this command to see which attributes you can train, such as str, wis, con and suchlike. Each teacher NPC has its own prescribed stats it can train. And once you find a teacher NPC that will train the stat you want, str for example, then you *train stat str*. Of course, each class has its preferred attributes to train and asking people about that in-game will guide you well.

The other thing to look at is if you're a bard. Then you'll want to use the song command to see what songs you can learn and what lyrics you know. If you are a bard, you'll *sing 'lyricname'*. Of course, certain songs are not advisable in crowded rooms.

This is just an add-on to previous posts. You've gotten good advice already so good luck, have fun, and most importantly, get addicted to SK.
