I'm a half-elf shaman in the Wastes area and I'm having a problem with leveling. I'm only level two, and after getting enough experience to train a few of my skills/spells to usable levels, I've found that leveling has become extremely slow going due to the familiarity system. I'm at a total loss as how to proceed. What do I do? I don't stand a chance against any of the NPCs in the city, and I'm sure I'd be killed if I wandered about too much anywhere else -- I've already been killed for wandering into a Giant Only bar, for example..

Oh, and on a good note: I was totally surprised when the giants actually attacked me. Haha!

I've not started in the Wastes in much too long to be helpful, but if you go to an inn, you can usually find people to ask. "Excuse me, do you know where a young adventurer should go after the spirits bid me move on from such-and-such place?"

Also, the AREA command might be of some help - at least in giving an idea of what's out there to find, and what areas are in your range. (i.e. >area or >area waste)

If all else fails, look for someone who has a title that might intrigue your character, and send them a TELL asking for advice. Most everyone should be glad to help out.

Welcome and I hope someone helps better soon!

The Wastes are a new area. I recently began an alt there, and had difficulty levelling after level 5 and I've been playing for four-five years now. The city is very confusing, but they ARE working on it, as I've heard.

The newbie area was great, but you hardly get any coin, and after you get to novice, you're basically screwed for levelling as a newbie.

Honestly? I'd suggest going to Teron or Nerina to train there. You'll find a lot more people willing to help and it will be easier to train and find your way around.

type in "who" and look for someone with an important-sounding title and ask them for help by typing "tell **** "I seek to train. Can you assist me in finding the area for those of amateur status?" or something along those lines.

After you learn where things are a little bit, you can type in "area" which tells you where you can train at what levels.

Good luck!

Also try using the mentor command in your Wastes newbie area, seems like there's a lot of high level Wastes chars right now and one may be willing to give you a hand

Yes, even the "evil" characters will help a newbie! I received prompt attention when I used the mentor command, as well as money, a new outfit, and training all the basic skills/languages needed for my char and real assistance finding places to train. Maybe you'll be as lucky.

There are a few challenges that you're facing. For starters, the leveling area of Kychire is sub-par. It really isn't a great area and really needs to be worked on. Secondly, the IMMs decided to let people start in Kychire again, but they haven't removed the block in the main entrance to the city, so the area is almost completely deserted. As of right now, I haven't found a way in unless I get lucky with a rare item that teleports me in. You're best bet is to try the mentor command, or to randomly ask people with titles similar to what your character wants to be for some help. If you want, PM me the name of your character, and I'll keep an eye out for you to see if I can't help you at all.

If you're level two, just keep killing the NPCs in the newbie area. It's a little different but it's doable. It might be slow because your character has low charisma or you are using a wooden weapon.

Following the advice of the above posters, you might be able to get someone to help you find a weapon. (I recently leveled a character in the wastes starting area and was good once I was able to find a steel axe on the ground outside where the dwarves are. They don't even kick you out when you are novice, so it's nice)

Also, if you are concerned about the speed of your leveling, don't waste XP on non-essential skills or spells. Level up to novice first, then train all the extra amateur skills/spells that you skipped.

Heh heh.

To Ren: I haven't seen the new krychire newbie area (It's been revamped recently) but there -should- have been a place where you started out training that contains NPCs near your level (Around 1-10.) These NPCs are typically easier to kill compared to other things in the realms and often fight to stun also, so even if you lose a fight to one, there's no horrible consequence. I'd suggest that since you're level 2, you might try to find your way back there.

Also, as has been suggested, you may wish to forego training skills as soon as you reach their status if they aren't necessary for leveling. Spells like cure light and refresh, and skills like axe, second attack, enhanced damage and the like are very important for leveling, but other spells/skills such as self defense, many maledictions such as deafness/poison/weaken, and the like are less important. Of course, feel free to examine each spell's helpfile before you make your own decision.

Most of all, however, you should be able to utilize the "mentor" command in-game, or send a "tell" to a character in the 'who' list that sounds like they're from the Northern Wastes, or even one that simply sounds important.

It's true that the new Wastes is probably still pretty raw. However, not getting any XP even though you are only level 2? Newbie areas aren't affected by negative familiarity. I double checked and the area appears to be flagged correctly. Not sure what might be going wrong here.
