I joined this server to hang out with a real life friend, and he's been pretty helpful about showing me around but he's not always online and doesn't always know the answer to some of my questions. So, I've turned to the Newbie Board for assistance!

Humans and Half-Elves get +3 and +1 to their primary stats, respectively. How do you know the primary stat of a given class? I imagine for Mercenary it would be pretty obvious, but not so much for the spell casting classes.

How important are Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma to spell casters? It sounds like great fun to play a Giant Warlock, but I'm worried that he wouldn't be even slightly competitive in the PvP environment.

Why do certain races only allow certain classes? It seems to directly prevent a lot of interesting roleplay to prevent certain race and class combinations. There are always outliers. Always.

Is there any way to pick up skills that are not part of your usual class-list? Or do you always have to rely on finding a person of that class and befriending them?

I've discovered the Exile Sewers and the Outpost. What are some other good places to go to gain some worthwhile experience? I cannot seem to find a cartographer in game who will sell me any maps.

If I think of any more, I will post them here!

Int and Wis are important to spell casters, One has to do with your base mana and the other how many spells you can concentrate on. (Check help int, help wis) I'm not so sure about CHA, I think at least with mages it has something to do with your charms, but you can normally get away with sociable, it also helps you gain xp faster.

Certain races aren't allowed all classes such like a giant rogue, this is because it would be over powered, My guess. Also things like a deep-elf paladin wouldn't fit the RP of a deep-elf.

As far as I know, you can not pick up skills that aren't apart of your normal skillset (aside from Swim, speaking languages and reading languages)

As far as finding a place to XP besides the exile sewers and outpost, I'm not 100% sure if its allowed for me to tell you here, but I will say that there are a lot of people ingame that will help a newbie out, You simply have to ask. '"Hi, I've just came of age and finished my amateur training, I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions. " Almost everyone will give you some sort of answer, or at least try to point you in the right direction. :)

Thank you for the assistance with some of my questions! Yeah, I checked the Int and Wis help files, but most of the help files in this game are great for telling me what commands to use and terrible for telling me how things actually work.

As for not being allowed to tell me something, I am not certain what you mean. Why would you be unallowed to tell me something?

I meant, telling ic things on an ooc board. A.e. the best places to xp in game, though i wouldn't be an expert but i'm decent at low levels.

Theoretically, that shouldn't be a problem. With so many skilled and competent NPC's in the game, I'm certain one of them would give out the information in exchange for a beer or a little coin. I don't imagine you would be telling me anything an NPC couldn't tell me.

Type area as a command when you are in game. This will being up a list of commands involving area. One of them tells you areas that are within your level range for leveling at. Once you've got a few in mind that are in your level range, I would suggest sending someone IC a tell asking them about the area and how to get there. That'd be the best thing to do as most people will give you information about the place that you can't find on a map. Like what NPCs assist each other, what not to attack, don't fall down this rope and get stunned...etc.

That's a lovely theory. Try pitching it to the staff. We aren't allowed to give specific in character information out of character. To do such is punishable in several ways, ranging from time in hell to loss of experience.

The mentor command is available for you also, as long as you are below Apprentice in . Go to the inn of your starting Kingdom (I'm guessing the Hart and Rose by your post) and type in Mentor. It will alert a mentor, either of your class or the nearest to it - depending on who is online - that you require assistance. Usually the mentor will either contact you via tell or simply travel to the inn to offer help directly.

The race/class restrictions are, as Raina said, mostly due to the fact that the roleplay that would allow them to exist simply would not fly. Deep-elf paladins, griffon necromancers, etc. Those defy the alignment system. Others defy logic - like a wizened mage of a giant. If you bothered to roll one, you'd be pretty quick to draw unfriendly immortal attention and the punishments I mentioned above.

I would caution you and your friend on the use of numbers. While "Humans get +3 to their prime stat" is all but canon knowledge, it technically has no source in-game and is part of the game mechanics that are supposed to be obscure to provide more realism. (I could be wrong, but the general situation still stands -- there are things people know that the game tries hard not to tell you.) It is part of the knowledge base that most "experienced" players know, but newcomers have no accurate way to learn this except through what are, technically, illicit means.

My best advice would be to make some friends in-game; it would add to your roleplay experience. Consider avoiding the forums and other instant messaging mediums. I've tried a few different attempts, and in my personal experience, the game is most enjoyable when there's the least amount of information to suspend or disregard when playing a character.

There are a number of maps available that make the game much more enjoyable, as well. I'd highly urge you to explore these as you explore the game world in kind.

I went ahead and asked someone online and got a very friendly person who showed me all kinds of useful features. I can ride a horse now!

Certainly. Staff, listen up! You have to presume the NPCs offer certain basic information that they do not mechanically offer. You can imagine the entire conversation in your head, if you wish, but it still effectively happened. My NPC mom taught my character how to speak, some NPC at the Academy filed my paperwork, and Grimm at the Hart and Rose is regaling me with tales about where he fought as a young warrior!

Those maps are awesome, and very helpful. I had no idea they even existed on the main site. Thank you very much! In any case, number crunching is fun and I quite enjoy mathematics. I have no intention of rambling about numbers in any IC sense, so I imagine it should be fine to ramble about them in an OOC sense.

First off, welcome to the game!

As for prime stats:

Mercenary - STR
Swashbuckler - DEX
Barbarian - STR
Priest - WIS
Paladin - STR
Hellion - STR
Shaman - WIS
Rogue- DEX
Scout - DEX
Bard - CHA
Sorceror - INT
Warlock - INT
Necromancer - INT


As far as INT, WIS and CHA - INT is of utmost importance to all spellcasters, as more concentration allows you to hold more spells, an. WIS is important as it determines your mana/mana regen (And also helps with will saves) but it is not as important as INT, especially since you can train mana separately from wisdom for each class, which adds to both your base mana pool and to your mana regen.

Charisma is VERY important for sorcs, necros and warlocks, but it is not as integral to most other classes: One of the biggest reasons for this this is that when you order a pet, follower, charmed person, animated undead, tribunal guard or anything that you can control to perform some action (Order all dirt Seago, order all bash Caquartien, order all rescue xxx, etc.) your character is actually prevented from performing any other commands for a period of time dependant upon your charisma. This lag can range anywhere from slightly less than a combat round for the most dynamic characters to almost three combat rounds for the abysmally repulsive, and those precious combat rounds can make a huge turning tide in a PvP or PvE scenario. Conversely, charisma is not as important for priests, shamans and paladins, because unlike sorcs (charm person, which is also affected by CHA directly in success rate), necros (undead hordes to order) and warlocks (elementals to order) these casters have nothing powerful beyond storebought pets to order around to make a difference in combat. Of course, your innate charisma also affects your experience gain (And if you are playing a light-aura, requesting), which is a decent reason to at least put it somewhere in the middle of the road for a first character as well.

Bards and Swashbucklers also should have maxed charisma as that directly affects their most powerful abilities (songs and taunt)

Other than that, I do encourage you to ICly find characters who are willing to help out and interact with yours, and learn things such as places to train and where to find useful equipment that way. At the very least every high level character should be able to tell you where they personally trained.

Oh, and you should also make liberal use of this map, because it owns.
