I notice that I get xp from discovering certain places, but not all. At first I thought that I was getting xp only from places that were appropriate for my level from the area command, but this doesn't seem to be the case. Some places that were mentioned in the area command would not give me xp. What decides if discovering a place will give you xp?

If you're too high or low then you won't get exp for exploring the area. You have to be within a certain range, I just can't remember what it is at the moment.

You are generally correct. Discovering areas within your level will grant you some experience, while discovering areas below or above your level may not. However, there are more factors determined in those equations, including the range of levels the area supports. Also, keep in mind that you may get some experience, just not enough to bump you up to the next experience tick.

In general, discovering new areas within your level range is beneficial, and you should always explore when you can.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think there are some areas that just don't reward you at all for discovering them, although they seem few and far between. But I guess I could have always been discovering them at a bad time, level-wise, myself. (?)

Does the "area" command correlate with what levels you can discover new areas at? I am an exploratory type of player so it always bothers me when I "discover" new places and then don't get XP for it, especially for those of us who hate grinding - and isn't that exactly why the area was put into the game in the first place?

It's best to hit those areas at the lowest listed range of level. If you wait, you're going to get shafted - which really makes it pointless in a lot of cases.

I always thought you'd still get the xp for discovering a place if you were too low a level, but seems I'm wrong on that. Searched my logs from yesterday where an Apprentice 3 character of mine discovered the Pits of Az'Pook for the first time, and nothing :(

Guess you do have to be pretty careful if you want all the xp for discovering places, good to know. (it would be way cooler if you got an insane amount of xp for discovering places you shouldn't be at yet :P but that's just me dreaming)

And likely abused if a higher level character helped you run around.

I think a small token of XP would be nice if an area is above you, rather than zero. Not sure how it works at present, since it's a code thing.

Every place from the 'area' command has exp possible for discovering, theres no place that you can discover that doesn't.

If you enter a place and get a 'you've discovered this area' or w/e message, then you can get exp from there you just have to be within the range.

I will say that it is best to discover areas as soon as you can type area and see it.
