Okay, since I'm obviously more clueless than even I knew... How about some tips for sorcerers? I have the leveling thing pretty much figured out... stand behind something and spam magic missiles and color spray. I'm doing very well with that. I have no illusions of ever becoming good with PvP but I'm sure I spent my stats wrong and such. Any tips you have that you think I should know about, I would be grateful for.

Having a wimpy set will save your butt a lot. INT and CHA are the most important stats for sorcs, WIS and ART are also important as they all effect your spells the most. Sorcs are frail and get owned physically easily so don't try to counterbalance it, just accept it and get good at fleeing/running when things get hairy. Etherealform is the best thing ever scribe it, use it often, it will save your butt more than any spell you have. Rogues are your bane, they will kill you with no problem so make friends with them

Have mirror image up at all times. It's the best defensive spell in the game for non-melee classes, and takes minimal concentration.

Always have either an etherealform wand or an etherealform scroll equipped.

Never, under any circumstances, should you be in the front row. Choose a sturdy pet.

Enchant your gear so that at a -minimum- you have 25wp, 20fort, 25mp.

Keep word of recall in your inventory at all times. Keep cure blindness herbs there too.

Have wimpy set, but I would definitely avoid the idiotic wimpy 100 that you see some people use.

Don't anger shamans. Rogues are not actually a threat if you know you've made one angry, but a shaman can kill you whenever he wants, and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it.

As for stats, int, wisdom, charisma need to be maxed naturally unless you plan on being ridiculously dependent on mods. Some people say you need CON maxed naturally, but personally I would mod it in order to get mana and art trains. Finally, dex is useful for avoiding dirt kick. I wouldn't train fewer than six art and four mana, at a minimum.

There is basically huge disagreement, even among veterans, on the value of art and mana trains. A lot of skilled players will tell you that art is useless, but in my testing, that definitely did not seem to be the case. imo, six art is the absolute minimum you should have, and nine is more comfortable. Mana is extremely helpful, and I would personally max it, though you don't have to.

Thanks. Both of you. I figured Int and Wis and Art and Mana were all important but I didn't realize that CHA was going to be so important until recently. What does it do for the charm person spell? Does it make it easier to charm a person or does it just make the person more likely to follow orders?

All the advice about wimpy and what to have on hand and in inventory is very good. I don't know if I can follow all of it, but it's very good advice and I'll give it a shot.

I've never had so much fun in this game but I am kinda tired of being dead.

Thanks again.

Marilyn

Having high charisma makes the lag after giving orders much less. Sorcs use the order command a lot in pvp. It also makes charm person (very OP spell) land more easily, and will also help you level.

Wimpy 50 is pretty good for a sorc. Baldric gave very good advice that I agree with 100%.

But never choose half-elf as a race for your sorc, ever, under any circumstances. I recommend human, sprite, elf/delf.

I personally maxed art on my sorc, which was useful for certain cabal spells - if you're planning on going that way.

Baldric gave some good advice concerning how to play the spells, inventory, and enchant game.

I will tell you more. I will give you three useful tricks.

1. Know where to find your stat mods and well-enchantable or well-enchanted equipment.
2. Know where to find items that provide you a competitive edge. I have heard rumors that many of the inspirational sources for the game were persons heavily involved in the RPGA; keep that in mind as you hear tales in-game of peculiar items. They will probably only be available if you gank Terrell.
3. Three-letter or fewer aliases for every spell you can cast. You'll save yourself a lot of time.

Not to toot my own horn, but I will say I've played one of the best sorcs recently.

You want Mana trains, max if possible. You want INT/WIS maxxed naturally. You don't really need max CHA, 18~ is enough.

CON is so overrated. 10~ is enough CON. And don't bother modding it up.

DEX is overrated. My sorc had 9, and never modded it up. You have Mirror Image for a reason.

9~ art is good. More is good, if you can manage it. My character had 6, got to 8 via mentor stat points.

You do not need to alias all your spells, omg. Alias your detects, magic missile, and that's about it. Everything else is easy to cast. c slee/c acid/c gia/c haste/c mirr/c petr/c depet/c gate/c summ.

Wimpy varies, depending on your situation. Sometimes having it too low will get you killed, sometimes having it too high will get you killed.

Sorcs are COMPLETELY loot dependent. For this reason alone, a newbie will rarely make a good sorc, unless you get someone to show you like 80% of the MUD.

Deep-elf/Human are the best races for sorc(Deep-elf by a mile). Sprite is acceptable, so is gnome (though I'd never recommend gnome). Not sure on elf. If they get 22 int, they make the cut.

Not to toot my own horn, but I played one of the most successful sorcs recently, and repeatedly ganked Doyenne's sorc with him. I also did not rage-delete said sorc.

Also, yes, please alias your spells. there's no reason not to, and it speeds things along and keeps you from typoing at the critical moment.

No, you do not need phat lewt to be a successful sorc. All you need is to know who Bill and Losquaty are, and know how to type c 'charm' somepoorsucker.

also, elves do get 22 int, and on another note entirely unrelated to this thread, taunt drops your int by more than 5 (see: 8 for a human, 10 for a halfling).

Delves are best but if you don't want to go darkie, go human and you'll still rape the entire mud. God, sorcs are so effing OP it hurts my eyes to read their spellset.

Yeah.

Magic is always overpowered in fantasy settings, though.

Its like, just to make an example, do you expect WiccanDiva's kabbalah powers or whatever to be in-line with some joe everyman's brick laying powers?

No. Because WiccanDive paid a fel and unspeakable price.

I played a sorc recently and I am one of the most intelligent and beautiful players in this game, and I can tell you that after watching everyone from Aldric to ZTerrell, sorcs are given the abilities to overcome all their weaknesses. If you play the l33t l00t game, you can even overcome them all at once. If you add NAUGHTY SEKRETS, you can even destroy your enemies while sleepwalking on your keyboard.

micro tldr; The sorc ability set supports highly competitive gameplay.

If you look at that another way, that means there are more ways to do sorc wrong than any other class in the MUD.

Your perspective should be decided before you begin gameplay and should be strong enough to withstand any challenges you could come up against to it, including being dominated, mocked, or outliving all the people that interested you and don't need enchanting done.
