Post subject:  Damage types.

Hey guys, I'm seeing some weapons do some weird things, ie acid damage, being made of iron / obsidian etc.

So my question is this. If something does acid damage, but is composed of iron, does it still get bonus damage vs iron weak races?

Furthermore, whats the advantage of having various damage types such as flaming bite, acid etc. I know centaurs are weak to flame and giants weak to lightning (oddly enough I don't know of any lightning weaopns..) but do they have any bonuses? Thanks in advance.

Edit: Just to clarify, by bonuses do I mean elemental weapons are harder to parry, do more initial damage, negate MP or AC etc.

Wow, that's actually a question I've never thought of, but makes a lot of sense to ask.

To my knowledge, the iron weakness would still apply. I don't know of any other advantages of a special damage type, but I've seen Resist Energy apply against those weapons. I think there was one fight where someone beat Orac's (was it Orac's?) mercenary by using a vial of RE against his freezing bite no-dachi.

Oh right, some damage types bypass things like stoneskin. Can't forget that.

Hmmm... Sucks to be a minotaur vs someone with an energy weapon that does sonic damage who is aimed upper.

I'm not sure that energy weapons necessarily do energy damage, but I could be wrong. I have no idea what starts to happen at that point.

...but yes, it would suck.

Damage bonuses don't stack - IE: If you were using a cold-iron weapon that also had a life drain attack, it wouldn't hurt elves any more than one or the other by itself would have. They do, however, both get to count in determining a damage bonus. A cold-iron nunchaku with a lightning attack will get damage bonuses against people with cold-iron weaknesses AND people with lightning weaknesses.

Resist elements does help with elemental type attack weaponry, there is a log on the popular log site where Braxis uses RE against sakim (Rial's?) no-dachi specced merc and doesn't take much damage: But that's more on account of the fact that Braxis had a crapton of hit points and Sakim wasn't buffed. There's also a log of Baba (priest) in melee with Veret (swashie) and outhealing Veret's damage because he has RE against Veret's elemental weaponry.

There are people who say that weaponry with any special damage attack does damage depending on your OVERALL MP (IE: if you have 30 MP on your suit, a deadly wrath/freezing bite/etc attack will hurt more than if you had 50 MP on your suit), but I personally think that's bogus. As far as the attack type affecting parry deal, only subtype affects that as far as I know (Though you may be more likely to hit someone if you are using a weapon they are weak against.)

However if its a slashing type weapon with acid bite or divine wrath, you still cannot blitzkrieg with it...why?

All damage from a weapon with a special damage type has 50% physical and 50% of the special damage. So a flaming iron weapon would have 50% as the physical iron damage and 50% as the fire damage. D clarified this a few years ago.
