Is there an IRC community / group of people who chat while they play?

There is an IRC community of (mostly former) players, but the discussion has absolutely nothing to do with SK.

I thought the IRC assistance might be handy for new people trying to get their footing.

Is anything similar available for new people? What's the IRC connection info for the old players?

The IRC community is always amenable to new chatters, but as I said they seldom discuss SK. It's not an administration-sanctioned forum. It's just a bunch of people who've known each other through the game for years who made their own chat room.

What you're looking for simply does not exist. I would encourage you to find someone helpful IC. The people playing are the ones who actually want to do so, and those with vested interest in bringing up new players. With as frequently as the game changes, it is not really advisable to rely on old players' memories of how to do things. Besides all that, the staff of the game has long held a stance against sanctioning such a thing. They wish for information to be passed along in the game, or on these forums.

Don't go in with great expectations about learning about SK, though.

I'd echo evena's post, and go as far as saying that some immortals have been known to enjoy changing the game after coming across OOC info on the web, so that those following such 'cheat guides' end up rather lost.
