I've read the help text on alignment so I know that alignments are just for guidance and not supposed to be a finite list of behaviours that your character should or shouldn't exhibit.

But.

Is it still considered bad rp for darkies to try to roleplay being all nice, or for lighties to try to rp having a dark side? I realise no character is perfect, so mistakes will be made, but I'm not talking momentary lapses of judgement. I'm also aware that those of dishonest persuasion will do whatever it takes to get what they want, even if it includes trying to corrupt a lightie into compromising values that they hold dear.

Okay, everyone with me so far?

Why then, do I meet darkies that take exception to me treating them with disdain? (and I include OOCly here, not just their character understandably ICly miffed when I won't resurrect them)

Why do I also meet darkies asking me how to 'change their heart'? (something I thought was plainly not possible, with the advice from IMMs to simply delete and start-over with the alignment they *do* want)

...and why do I see lighties being far too friendly with darkies that are overtly dark?

I'm confused.

To me this isn't good rp and I'm sorry if you read this and think I'm singling you out. If it helps, I don't have just one example in mind. A single example I would have let go, but I've been logging in daily since November and I reckon I get an episode that fits the above maybe weekly or at least fortnightly.

I'm genuinely looking for advice on how to better roleplay my character as at the moment, I seem to be at odds with some players and I'd like to resolve this.

Warning... this is from my perspective only

Why then, do I meet darkies that take exception to me treating them with disdain? (and I include OOCly here, not just their character understandably ICly miffed when I won't resurrect them) Because they're whiny losers... A lightie priest not resurrecting a darkie character is totally normal RP, and they should realize that.

Why do I also meet darkies asking me how to 'change their heart'? (something I thought was plainly not possible, with the advice from IMMs to simply delete and start-over with the alignment they *do* want) This could actually be part of their RP. A lot of darkies try to make friends with lighties so they will be "friends" and they won't have to do anything. They actually have no desire to change, just to make you THINK they'll change.

...and why do I see lighties being far too friendly with darkies that are overtly dark? Sometimes it's so they can get phat loot and because they are friends IRL. I don't mean to call people out, but I remember Emet (Dulrik priest) shunned anyone with a dark heart, even grey rogues, and regularly hunted and killed them. Yet he and Aldric were BFF. When Faerti asked him about it, he said it was okay because Sargas was fine.... and they regularly helped each other out during hero competitions, etc.

Now I believe it CAN be done RP-wise, because for some lighties, you just want to be good yourself, not necessarily that you shun evil and want to eradicate it. Faerti was a scrupulous character with plenty of darkie friends, but she was a Druid - she saw a purpose for the "other side" as it were and tried to understand where they were coming from. She wouldn't help necromancers and tried to stay away from overtly dark-hearted people.

Also, the dwindling p-base is to blame. But I mean, in real life, we all probably have friends that aren't exactly the best people, but there's some quality or history there that makes us still remain friends with them. We wouldn't help them do anything bad, but we would still sit there and talk to them if they came around.

Because black and white thinking reeks of melodrama, which is bad in the theater and also bad here. Nobody wants your [REDACTED] melodrama.

ICly, some darkies will understandably be annoyed when your character doesn't help them, regardless of your aura. This should not carry over into OOC, however. Anyone who whines OOC because you won't help them is a pansy and should be spam-killed. In fact, that's probably why they're asking you for life.

Darkies and lighties don't have to kill each other on sight, but they're not supposed be buddy-buddy either. While there are definitely players who feel no problem with being the exceptions to this rule, it's possible that more often than not those "friendly" interactions you see are just a sheen covering over the animosity between the two people interacting, or perhaps they prefer to keep the other person in check peacefully.

I'm just going to pause to laugh at the partial sentence I've quoted.

Though I might take offense to the example jennbo provided, her overall responses to dufelt's questions were pretty good.

Maybe the darkie in question is after more than just a simple friendship(not sex either pervs).

Algon played Emet, and I do not feel that he RPed him poorly in forming a friendship and alliance with Aldric.

Either way, I was just trying to come up with a real-life example, and I didn't mean to personally offend anyone!
