A Bright Tunnel
  Two large bulbs of energy hover off the ground here, their eerie blue glow
covering everything.  The hall turns south where several doors can be seen
against the eastern wall.  To the west, a large door stands, leading into
a vast room of some sort.  The hallway here is bland and boring, though the
carpeting seems rather expensive.
Obvious exits: s w
     The corpse of Dufelt is lying here.
     The corpse of the elite guard is lying here.
A guard paces back and forth here, waiting for something to happen.
A busy servant runs through the keep on some errand.

I know I died ... but I didn't think I should have. I was knocked unconscious by a headbutt, but my pet wolf managed to stun them ... then I was killed, presumably by the guard recovering ... then I staggered to my feet??!!

If nothing else this will teach me to have my pet on stun...

Yup. You got headbutted, the guard got stunned by your pet, but then the next tick the guard recovered and killed you. The "stagger to your feet" message is actually the message sent by headbutt wearing off, much like "You can see again" for blindness wearing off: You still got the message for headbutt wearing off, even though it wore off on account of you dying and not because you got up before being taken out.

Having the pet on kill would have saved you! Stunning pets are worthless, I learned along time ago, even though pets steal XP it is worth it for momments like this.
