I've read as much as I can trying to understand the trains and stats system. As far as I can tell it's something like:

CON: Raises max HP and regeneration rate
HP: Raises max HP - best used with lots of trains
WIS: Raises max ME and regeneration rate
Mana: Raises max ME and regeneration rate

I'm trying to plan my character out and thinking which of these I should train. In general, is it recommended to max WIS/CON before Mana/HP? Which has the most bang for the train? Some characters are saying mana trains are worthless... others are saying they are great for regen... bleh. I need a consensus here. ;)

HP and mana trains will give you the most bang for your buck. I don't know why there's any contention about this. Maxing out your mana trains will give you *way* more mana than maxing out the wisdom stat. Also, wisdom can be modded, mana trains cannot (though you can find equipment that will increase mana, it won't give the regen bonus).

It is recommended to max Wis/Con before Mana/HP, but how you do that can make a difference. You can more easily find magical items to increase wisdom and constitution, so you could leave those stats a bit lower and use those items to max those two stats, allowing you to put more towards Mana and HP.

Sadly, you won't find a consensus, but by popular vote, mana trains are amazing and you should get them. Art, a third and even more debated stat, doesn't have a consensus on it being useful on certain spells.

OK... I think what I'm hearing is:

Maxing mana is more important than maxing wisdom, since wisdom can be done through items.

Important numbers for Art are.... 3/6/9? More maybe but people debate if it's worth it? And Art is mostly useful for PvP not PvE?

Wisdom if you're a caster should be maxxed if not naturally then at least through mods. Wisdom also helps with Willpower which is important.

Con isn't so important to some casters but important to others, it can also be modded but con mods are harder to find. Con also helps with movement and your fortitude save.

Pretty much on any char the only stat you need maxxed because it doesn't work with mods is Cha. This is due to the fact that you can't get the xp increase from cha unless it is raised naturally and not through buffs. I could see a case being made about not maxing any stat, except for cha, because you can use items to raise it to the max. I would defer to the grinders in the game more on that, though.

Wait a moment -- can you still raise your Cha with mods for purposes other than exp bonus?

Yes. It will assist with certain faction abilities as well as reduce the lag that comes as a result of issuing orders to pets.

I will just chime in something that was implied above but maybe not spelled out. Mana trains will only help you with mana. Wisdom helps mana and your willpower save and various other miscellaneous things in the game that check your wisdom modifier. So you can't directly compare them -- they are different from each other.
