There are quite a few things that restore mana, but most of them aren't easily accessible. Keep in mind that healing isn't really all that useful either, most of the herbs and storebought potions you find heal very small amounts. Only brewed heal and certain potions give you a huge amount of health.

You and everyone else. They'd run out long before you reached the store. Restoring mana is a bit lame.

I played a sorc, and I scribed plenty. In fact, the last thing I did before I deleted was scribe mirror image on 220 scrolls (only about 100 of which survived), without the help of a bard (none available) and without an inn (sleeping in an inn with that many MI scrolls is dangerous). So yes, I'm well aware of how much it sux to use up large amounts of mana in tedious tasks- scribing MI took up 48% of my mana when it suceeded. it's to keep the game balanced. Otherwise, we'd have a huge influx of prepared items and casters that never needed to rest.

Btw, there are items that give you quite a bit of mana. I can think of one neck piece that's well coveted that can max out a max wis helf hellion's mana from 0.

On a side note:

Does a failed scribe hurt the scriber?

Yes. A failed scribe hits you with a fireball, a failed brew is acid, and a overcharged staff/wand/etc. chain lightnings you. Just FYI.
