Or for a merc to want to be a sprite/halfling smasher.

*shrug*

Adamantite fully enchanted flaming bite reaching staff? Might be of use.

DA, english quarterstaffs were held at the end to give you the most reach. Their length would be as high as you could reach with one hand. Yes, longer than a flamberge in that sense. Most martial arts trainedtoday use more oreintal staff fighting with bo staves and such which the ideal height is eye level with it's user. Bo staves do exist, also longer staves do in SK. Some should have reach.

As a person who has been trained in that bo staff. I will say this, it might be long enough to have reach but typically you don't attack people holding it on on end. If you do, you will most likely get creamed. Typical attack distance is equal to twice your armlength, which is on par with some swords. Also, the English fighting quarterstaff had iron shods on the ends. Which would make holding it on one end unwieldly at best.

There are staves that have longer reach but they cease to function like a staff. They are wielded more like a pole-arm/pike.
