It's always been this way though. It wouldn't be possible to dispel undead while ethereal either if you were to change it like you're asking for.

'Cancellation' is utterly broken and 'Dispel Magic' does very little to what it should.

I stand my ground, both spells are fine. It seems it's just fine to make such statements without argumentation, so I'll continue along the trend...

The spells are fine, charm person is a very powerful spell, and there needs to be more than 2 classes that can undo the charm. If anything, dispel magic should be changed to dispel beneficial and negitive affects, it is all magic.

Once my Sorc character had a charmed Bill K., and a Jolly male Elf stepped into the room and uttered the quick word, "cancellation" freeing Bill quicker than you say, "leederhosen". My sorc was GM with 14 trains in ART and he still took my charm away on the first try.

Cancellation is friggin awesome...that is unless it has been changed in the last 6 months.

There is absolutely no reason to change this. Charm person is a very powerful spell, but it can be very dangerous to use if you aren't careful. If dispel magic isn't intended to be a good spell, why is it so hard to learn?

From what I got out of SK these past couple years: dispel magic is a spell that is supposed to take away positive buffs that a character can get, and cancellation is a spell that is supposed to take away negative buffs a character can get. Charm person is a negative buff (lowers intelligence, makes the character follow orders) so it should only be affected by cancelation.

That's how I look at it..

However, I think that it should be changed so that dispel magic takes away every buff that a character has and cancellation takes away negative buffs (but something has to be done to cancellation because it's too easy to cancel charms).

Dispel should not remove charm off the charmie.

Why? Because you can sit ethereal and use dispel magic into the solid plane. And vice versa.

This is what cancellation is for.

lagelli is right and Grakus has a point. I could see dispel removing all magic--it would make more sense because it is all 'magic', but then again I would rather it be the way the helpfiles already describe them, and they way lagelli describes them(including the overpoweredness of cancellation). Yes there needs to be cancellation, but consider that the casting time is less than magic missile and that it is not an offensive spell, and it may be a bit overpowered (or maybe not).
