Shattered Kingdoms

I have been trying to work this out and I cannot come up with a feasible answer to it. Why is it so important to choose alignment first? Yes, it has been said for role play, but that just doesn't mesh with me. For people like myself, my thought process is the race for role playing ability, then the class, then the alignment, so it is hard to wrap my mind about this.
