The following things should be a crime:

  • Taking a PC corpse that is not yours
  • Skinning, butchering, or otherwise destroying a PC corpse that is not yours
  • Ordering someone to take or destroy a PC corpse that is not yours.

It seems like an oversight that it is a crime to take stuff from a corpse but not to take the entire corpse with everything in it or destroy the corpse then take everything that was on it. I could see making exceptions for the "otherwise destroying" part in certain jurisdictions, but in general these things should carry legal penalties.

The first one adds insult to injury for people trying to get allies' bodies out of the waste, but everything else makes sense.

Pretty sure that taking a PC corpse that isn't yours is considered theft.

No, only taking things from a PCs corpse is.

First one, no, for the same reason grep said.

Second one, yes, except in the Wastes where they wouldn't give a single rabbit pebble about the mutilation of bodies.

Perhaps the Wastes should view NOT mutilating the body of your victim as a crime.

That is not an issue. First of all, if you are in enemy territory, what do you care about one more crime if you just fought people and are trying to take your fallen compatriot's corpse away? If you couldn't lift the entire weight of the corpse and just took the items out instead you'd get a crime added to your list. Why should taking the whole corpse be any different? If you are in friendly territory, just don't report your friend when he grabs your corpse for you, and if there are NPCs around poltergeist it first then let him take it. Or just pardon him if you have the means. Or ask a local tribunal member to get it. Just because it's a crime doesn't mean it will get reported or that it will stick.

This is not a valid objection to this blatant inconsistency. If theft of stuff from a corpse is a crime, then taking the corpse with all the stuff should be at least as severe a crime. You're arguing for artificial convenience over internal consistency and, as I just pointed out, it's not even a big inconvenience. There is no valid reason for corpse taking to work the way it does vis-à-vis corpse looting.

I agree that in the Wastes desecrating a corpse should not be against the law. That was the exception I was talking about. Anywhere else, it should be a crime.

One more crime may make the difference between banishment or not, so it would seem that some characters have roleplay that would make it an issue. While you make a good point, you're basically suggesting a system where people must work *around* it in a rather common situation.

That, and only that specific ally corpse recovery piece, doesn't necessarily sound like an improvement from the current ways we interface with the law in-game.

Now, if the game could KNOW which corpses are your allies', that would be quite something. Perhaps creating a UUID per group and setting something like a quest bit of the 'last group you were in,' then checking to see if the corpse and your values match. Then crime may or may not actually occur. Doesn't sound terribly difficult.

How would that strike you?

How to make it law immune for one person/group name/faction:

Code:
scorpse <person/group name/faction>

You give a person, a named group, or a faction a small amount of your soul, so when they get items, or take the corpse, they will not be harassed by local law enforcement.
