Why don't you gear detect magic to deal with this. As is now, Detect magic doesn't do much other then tell you have an enchantment on it. How about you have detect make give you how many runes in total are on the items. Basically you are detecting only how powerful an item is enchanted. You could use the (magical) as sort of a gauge. Changing the color of the text to represent how many runes are on the items. Course that would only allow you to see if there were up to seven runes using the letters.
