It also shouldn't set off awareness in barbarians.
The barbarian would be alerted from his pet and/or others who follow him. If the rogue chooses to stay first row alone, it gets too risky for him. I can see it working only when spying for a short time. On the other hand, the barb doesn't see nor hear anything that the rogue can avoid. If a sleeping barbarian can sense a
ghost coming, how skilled does a rogue have to be?
Alertness is one of the skills that is supposed to give barbs something unique, especially compared to mercs. Fury, track, alertness, counterstrike. You wimp a couple of these, directly or indirectly and there will be no reason to prefer a barb to a merc.
I'd like to see an enhanced sneak skill available only to rogues, but opening doors silently doesn't sound like great help. Like Jardek said, a rogue can easily live without it. Knowing when they sneak and when they don't could work.

Also, I though barbs should be able to counterstrike the steal skill somehow. They have preternatural senses and I think they would be aware of a shift in their body weight if their coin purse were being manipulated or something.

But it's not about feeling the loss of weight. It's about feeling that hand coming.
