Why not just have good saves? My melee characters have never really suffered from being hit by too many spells once I get some decent enchanted gear.

HP hands down.

And if you have a reason to mod wis, for mana needed in spells/scripts or for saves, great wis mods grow on trees, great HP mods are rare.

Not to mention that I'd just rather have more willpower enchants than wis mods anyway, probably on scripted items that don't come with +wis on them.

You heard him man, there are two schools of thought.

HPs, and never played a merc.

I'd always pick HP. But I have started throwing points into the stats I need if I am caballed for instance, instead of modding many of them. Might be a personal thing, but I always get [REDACTED] for saves if I have to mod more than two stats.

But for the regular merc, hps for sure.
