My theory is that people had lower standards for what constituted desired gear back in those days. I'd bet a lot of the things they dashed for back then are freely available right now, but people either don't want it anymore or perhaps don't even know that those items exist.

Some of them DON'T exist. I remember when paladins/mercenaries made a mad dash to request the level 40 tanso steel gear that the guards in Everclear had. Or the automatic energy-ammo jade antique bow that was there in the shop. (long since removed)
